Scott Wiley is a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Dakota and nationally certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. He holds a Master’s degree in Counseling and Human Development from South Dakota State University. Scott is also an ordained minister of The Wesleyan Church and has over 30 years of pastoral experience. He has been trained from both secular and Christian perspectives and has nearly 20 years of clinical experience in both realms. My approach Based on your goals, I draw heavily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and its offshoots, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. For PTSD, I adapt Cognitive Processing Therapy. For couples, I use a variation of Emotionally Focused Therapy based on Attachment Theory. All of this is undergirded by a robust biblical Christian worldview and evangelical theological training. My focus About half of my clients have a Christian faith orientation. The other half come from diverse backgrounds, including agnostic and atheist. I typically work with adults individually or as couples for relationship counseling. My specialty is relationships, and I have published a book on the topic. Other common issues I counsel for include depression, anxiety, anger, and men’s sexual addiction. My communication style I aim to be warm, friendly, and natural, putting people at ease in sessions. I tend to be cheerful but not overbearing. I can laugh with clients when appropriate and sit with them in their pain when needed. Most people find it comfortable to work with me. My goals for you During the first session, I’ll ask, “What is your goal for counseling? What do you hope to take away? What outcome do you want?” If you have a list, I’ll ask, “Which should we start with?” We will work together to make your goals specific.
