More about Stephanie Schuler, LCSW
Play is actually the work of childhood, the most natural way for them to communicate, explore the world and experience thoughts and feelings. My experiences in the field and practice of clinical social work has been shaped by the application of play therapy in every way. Time and time again, I discovered that play was a unifying medium by which relationship with others became possible, even through the most extreme differences, conflict or trauma.
As a licensed clinical social worker and registered play therapist, my passion is in working with children and families in restoring their relationships and building up their self worth so that they can learn to heal. In working with families, I help them to unlock what they already have inside, empowering them with the tools they need to work through any situation - now and for the future.
I began to feel a sense of being grounded in my work when I started to see lives change for the better. It is something that became really special to me, in working with children and families - helping them to discover and heal from past wounds. There are conditions in people’s lives that manifest from childhood, when things are not dealt with as children, emotions can freeze in that moment - and stop growing.
With play therapy we cannot pretend to be someone else or something we are not, there are no predefined expectations, culturally or socially. We simply become present in that moment, holding a space for a child’s mind and heart in a sacred way.
I have a Masters of Social Work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University a Post Baccalaureate degree in Play Therapy and supervise licensees in Social Work on track toward licensure with the Virginia Board of Social Work and becoming play therapists toward registration with the Association for Play Therapy.
