More about Dr. Stephen Shainbart, PhD

I offer an interactive approach to therapy that is as comfortable as it is effective, and is designed to help you achieve your goals as soon as possible. I treat individual adults, couples, and teenagers in my practice. Some clients have told me that they tried psychotherapy in the past and shared much with the therapist, but ultimately left feeling they received little in return. All too often, that’s because many therapists sit quietly in the background and do not tell you what they are thinking. I approach things differently and in my 15 years as a therapist in Manhattan, I have always been straightforward and interactive with clients. I will give you constructive feedback during our time together. My years of training have equipped me with various skills and resourceful approaches to guide you through the therapeutic process. For example, one skill is my ability to understand many self destructive and counterproductive patterns (often unconscious) that you may fall into. Other skills that I offer are my use of constructive questions to build your self awareness, and knowing when to be a bit firm and nudge you into greater discovery, and when to be more gentle instead. Unlike many other therapists, I sometimes use humor in my work as a way to keep our time together as relaxing as possible for you. I see no contradiction between being playful while remaining a serious and focused healer. In terms of couples therapy, one area where I stand apart from many other therapists is my focus on exploring each individual partner’s earlier life experiences, or what I call their "backstory." We all have our backstories, and these may lead us to develop emotional patterns that we ultimately bring into our relationships, often unintentionally. These patterns can cause conflict and distance for the couple. It is therefore important to recognize and address these patterns, based in our “backstory,” in order to make therapy more productive and changes more lasting. Otherwise, couples therapy may begin to feel like a pointless merry-go-round (only not so merry). I will provide both you and your partner with direct feedback and suggestions on how to make productive changes to your relationship. But I assure you that these suggestions will be based on a thorough understanding of who each of you are as individuals, within the context of your unique backstory and resulting relationship patterns. From this informed perspective, you can make effective and enduring improvements to your relationship that lead to a much more fulfilling life together. Whether you are seeking individual or couples therapy, let’s go to work on making your life better.
