Getting to know Dr. John Menaker

Please note: This practice does not accept insurance. Dr. Menaker is an out-of-network provider and can provide documentation to support reimbursement when applicable. Dr. John Menaker is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, offering psychotherapy to adults, teens, and couples. He has over 20 years of experience working with individuals navigating a wide range of emotional, relational, and life challenges. Dr. Menaker works with concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, burnout, grief, adult ADHD, chronic pain, relationship difficulties, and periods of feeling stuck or uncertain about direction. People often seek his work when they feel overwhelmed, confused by recurring patterns, or unsure how to make sense of what they’re experiencing. His therapeutic approach is grounded in a depth-oriented, relational (psychodynamic) framework, with attention to how emotional patterns develop and function over time. When helpful, he also integrates practical, goal-oriented strategies drawn from evidence-based CBT approaches to support symptom relief and emotional regulation. His work is collaborative, flexible, and responsive to each individual’s needs. Dr. Menaker received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University after attending the Claremont Colleges in Southern California. His clinical training has included work in community mental health centers, college counseling services, residential/day treatment programs, and hospital settings. These experiences have shaped a culturally attuned, thoughtful approach to psychotherapy and a deep respect for the many ways people adapt, endure, and change. He maintains offices in Brooklyn Heights and Rockland County and also offers remote sessions when appropriate.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I begin by focusing on what you are most immediately struggling with and what’s bringing you to therapy now. Early sessions are a space to speak openly and to begin making sense of experiences that may feel confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to articulate. My approach emphasizes careful listening, collaboration, and helping people feel understood. Therapy unfolds at a pace shaped by each person’s needs, rather than a fixed formula, and develops over time as trust and understanding grow.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work is grounded in a depth-oriented, relational (psychodynamic) approach to psychotherapy, with attention to how emotional patterns develop and function over time. I’m particularly interested in helping people understand recurring patterns in their relationships, work, and inner lives. When helpful, I also integrate practical, goal-oriented strategies drawn from evidence-based approaches to support symptom relief and emotional regulation. The work balances deeper understanding with tools that can help people feel more stable and supported, especially during periods of distress.

Amazing, cozy space. Great bedside manner. A very active listener. He saw right through me within the first session and was already providing insights...
I’ve only had one session with Dr. Menaker so far but it happened at the right time. He had an appointment at 6 PM on Saturday and I desperately needed to speak with someone who wasn’t a therapist but a doctor. I booked the appointment a little over two hours before 6 PM. I hadn’t heard from him in an hour so I called and left a message. And then I realized he had actually confirmed the appointment prior to my call. But he still called me back. He was kind and patient even with my questions over the phone before our appointment. When we got on our call he gave me time to release everything that I was thinking and feeling at that moment. He didn’t cut me off right at 55 minutes, and made sure we were able to wrap up and talk about our next session, as well as how I wanted to proceed seeing him. I look forward to my future visits with Dr. Menaker and I hope others experience the same.

I left optimistic which says a lot.
Dr. John had a great manner and was very well structured in his responses and where he led the discussion. I was surprised and pleased at the levels of detail for a first session and he was very polite to draw any possible boundaries. I would recommend Dr. John to anyone seeking therapy to at least try his style.
Dr. Menaker was uniquely insightful. I've had experience with other therapists who seemed to just let me ramble and go nowhere, but Dr. M demonstrated understanding and empathy that I found immediately helpful. I will definitely be back!

I've been looking for a new therapist since I moved here and have gone through several, not being able to find one I liked. I met with John and immediately felt comfortable in his office. We talked, and he pinpointed exactly what I needed to talk about. He's a great listener and really knows his stuff.
Each visit creates an experience that allows you to look at different aspects of life (where u @ to where was @ to where u going or want to be). Could be life changing, but very professional and comfortable.
