Hello! I am Tanya Hunter, an LCSW of 18 years currently residing in Georgia. Therapy is not a one size fits so my approach depends solely on you. My focus areas of practice are anxiety, depression, life transitions (grief/bereavement, divorce, etc.), mood and personality disorders, trauma, PTSD, and couples/families
My approach
My approach depends on you and only you! However, my most common theoretical approaches are CBT, mindfulness, existential, Adlerian, psychodynamic, and narrative.
My focus
My only focus is adults, either individually, in a couple, or a family system. I am comfortable helping you with anything you feel is holding you back to be the best version of yourself.
My communication style
I tell every client that "it's safe in here". My intention is never to hurt, offend, or anger anyone so if anything I say or ask comes across that way to please let me know. I also tell my clients that we may touch some trigger points and painful subjects that I cannot promise will not be emotional. But what I can promise is to hold space for you and be there with and for you as we journey together.
My journey to mental healthcare
Before anything, I tell my client the parameters of therapy. I inform them that it is a confidential and safe space but that suicidal or homicidal ideations/plans have to be reported. After that, I do an intake and get a biopsychosocial history. I ask my clients what drew them to therapy at this particular time (why now?). After they share what they feel comfortable sharing, we discuss goals for our time together.
My goals for you
I graduated from NYU in 2005 with a Master's in social work. Prior to that, I attended Cornell University from 1997-2001 with every intention of becoming a labor lawyer. Somewhere in my undergraduate studies, I began to have a change of heart and just wanted to help people. I had always been that person everyone talks to...whether they knew me or not!
