When should I choose Urgent Care?

Usually, injuries or conditions that need medical attention within 24 hours fall under the category of urgent care. How much will an urgent care visit in San Antonio cost?

A variety of factors, including insurance, treatments, procedures, and location of the clinic, affect the cost of an urgent care visit. A single visit to an urgent care clinic in San Antonio, however, would normally cost uninsured patients between $150 and $250.

Simply choose your provider and plan from the drop-down insurance selection and then choose an urgent care facility or physician in your area that accepts your insurance.

Do urgent care centers in San Antonio offer virtual visits or telemedicine?

Many urgent care centers or providers provide the option of virtual visits. You can find San Antonio urgent care facilities and medical professionals who provide virtual appointments by looking for a purple icon on their Zocdoc profile or by using the platform's video visits filter.

What time of day is urgent care least busy in San Antonio?

The early morning or late afternoon on weekdays are the least busy times to visit an urgent care facility. This is because most patients visit in the morning and after dinner, which is right before or right after work or school. This time is also packed because individuals turn to urgent care facilities as a backup option when doctors' offices close in the late evening.

What is the best time to go to an urgent care center?

Within the first 24 hours after recognising symptoms or becoming injured, it is advised to visit an urgent care facility. Using Zocdoc, you may check the slots at the urgent care center of your choice to choose the most convenient time for you to visit that particular day.

What is urgent care?

Family physicians are usually your first point of contact during a time of medical need. However, a physician's office may stay shut in the evenings, nights, and weekends — and even if you fall sick during business hours, long wait hours may follow. That is why more and more patients have shifted to convenience care alternatives — such as urgent care centers, retail clinics, telemedicine, and kiosks.

Convenience care is known for making healthcare accessible to all: patients can visit any time of the day, wait for only short intervals (30 minutes, in some cases), and see a doctor. Because such clinics are often covered by medical insurance, they also lead to lower medical bills and out-of-pocket costs.

Urgent care is a walk-in medical service that provides treatment and care for medical problems when you cannot reach your family physician. Some patients may require follow-up or referral to specialists, transfer to an emergency department, or immediate hospitalization. Urgent care centers have freed Americans from restricted healthcare choices: in the face of acute injuries and illness, they could either stay home or rush to the ER (emergency room).

Now, you can quickly consult a licensed physician in a nearby urgent care center, also known as:

  • After-hours clinic
  • Convenient care clinic
  • Urgent care clinic
  • Non-emergency care clinic
  • Walk-in care clinic

Such clinics are staffed with MDs, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. In some cases, specialists (such as emergency care physicians) may also be a part of the team. You can often book same-day appointments and diagnostic services, including X-rays, bloodwork procedures, STD testing, etc. Many urgent care clinics also offer immunizations, including the flu shot and COVID-19 vaccines.

As there are few specific regulations for urgent care centers, it is always good practice to contact the clinic before the visit. You should know about the services offered and the insurance accepted. Also, ask if a licensed practitioner will see you.

When should you visit urgent care near you?

Urgent care centers are known to provide timely care for a range of acute conditions:

  • Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) or bronchitis
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Sprains, strains, and fractures
  • Minor burns
  • Lacerations
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Mild allergic reactions

Urgent care centers do not provide long-term care, conduct major surgeries, or treat inpatients. If you are suffering from a medical emergency, do not visit an urgent care center; contact emergency services immediately. In some cases, even low-severity conditions may signal a medical emergency —such as when the patient suffers from a pre-existing condition (osteoporosis) or belongs to a high-risk group (e.g., hemophilia patients or those with severe COVID-19). And some states always call for emergency care:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Suicidal ideation (thoughts of self-harm)
  • Partial or full-body paralysis
  • Sudden changes in vision
  • Pain in the chest or upper abdomen
  • Coughing or vomiting blood

In such cases, call 911 and reach out to the patient's family doctor immediately. If you are looking for hassle-free and timely care, book an appointment with an urgent care clinic now. Read on to find out about the best urgent care centers in San Antonio.

Types of urgent care services

Urgent care services have become an important part of the healthcare industry, providing fast and convenient access to medical attention for a variety of non-life-threatening conditions. Although many people consider urgent care a place to treat minor illnesses and injuries, these facilities provide various services to meet different healthcare needs.

General urgent care

General urgent care services are the foundation of urgent care facilities, catering to a broad range of non-emergency medical issues and providing accessible healthcare options. Some common conditions treated in general urgent care include minor injuries, such as sprains, strains, minor fractures, and cuts that require stitches, as well as common illnesses like the flu, colds, sinus infections, and bronchitis.

Pediatric urgent care

Pediatric urgent care centers specialize in treating children and adolescents, with pediatric health experts providing their services. Pediatric urgent care centers handle common childhood illnesses like strep throat, ear infections, and fevers, along with minor injuries such as falls, small fractures, and sports mishaps. These centers also provide vaccinations, including catch-up shots and flu vaccines, and manage respiratory conditions like asthma flare-ups and infections.

Occupational health services

Urgent care centers provide occupational health services to meet the needs of workplaces and ensure a safe and healthy work environment for both employers and employees. These services include pre-employment assessments, drug testing, evaluation and treatment of injuries, assistance with workers' compensation, vaccinations, and job-specific physical examinations at regular intervals.

Travel medicine services

Urgent care facilities are important for those planning international trips as they offer travel medicine services. These services include evaluations of health risks, administering necessary vaccinations such as typhoid, yellow fever, and hepatitis A/B, offering consultations on itineraries and potential health hazards, supplying medications for malaria prevention, and ensuring travelers have an adequate stock of necessary prescriptions.

How do you choose between urgent care and emergency care?

If you or your loved ones have ever had a medical emergency, such as abdominal pain or a minor fracture, you may have wondered where to go for treatment. Do you go to an emergency room or an urgent care center in this situation? What is different about these two facilities, and how do you decide where to go?

While an urgent care center has similar hours to other health facilities, an emergency room is open for 24/7 service. Both centers provide services such as diagnostic and laboratory tests. However, the difference lies in the severity of the problems they treat. Emergency departments treat all emergencies, including the most challenging medical situations such as a heart attack, sudden paralysis, or uncontrolled bleeding. They are also well-equipped to provide trauma care for injuries such as car accidents.

You may also need to wait longer in an emergency room than in an urgent care clinic. This is because emergency rooms base their wait times on the most life-threatening situations. Urgent care, however, deals with non-emergency problems that require medical attention within 24 hours. They deal with concerns like COVID-19, flu and cold symptoms, and vomiting. You can visit the urgent care facility if your symptoms are moderate. It is important to note that an urgent care specialist would not provide surgery, inpatient care, or continuing medical care in cases of chronic medical conditions. Knowing the differences between these facilities can save you time and money in any medical emergency.

Find the best urgent care near you in San Antonio, TX

Finding the correct urgent care physician can be challenging. If this is your first time in an urgent care clinic, you can read about the doctor's background beforehand. At Zocdoc, all providers have a personal biographical profile, including their medical education, board certification and licenses, top clinical interests, and customer ratings. Here, you can also learn more about your provider's cultural competence (including the languages they speak)

If you are concerned about budget, search for in-network providers. Enter your insurance carrier's name, and Zocdoc will show you the top-rated providers that accept your insurance. You can also enter key terms related to a medical condition or location for more targeted results. You can also browse through hundreds of verified customer reviews to find competent and friendly urgent care near you in San Antonio, TX.

Remember to take your medical reports and prescription medicines to the appointment. (You can replace the latter with a list of medications and their dosages.) If you still have questions, contact the clinic to learn more. All bookings on Zocdoc are simple, secure, and 100% free.

Urgent care in the United States

In general, urgent care centers treat conditions that are non-life-threatening but cannot wait for a scheduled doctor's appointment. For instance, over eight years, there was an almost 138% increase in visits to urgent care centers, according to a 2018 JAMA study. The authors looked at data from patients with commercial insurance to investigate trends in the use of convenience care. The visits to urgent care centers (per 1000 members) rose from nearly 66 visits in 2008 to about 157 in 2015. At the same time, there was a 14% decline in visits to the ER (emergency room).

Regardless of the surge in the popularity of urgent care centers, the average cost of a visit has remained more or less unchanged. When we look at inflation-adjusted prices, the 2018 JAMA study showed that urgent care centers saw a negligible increase in treatment costs — even though the average cost for a trip to the emergency department rose significantly.

The convenience care economy is a crucial part of the US healthcare system. As per the 2013-14 National Health Survey, approximately 12% of adult respondents went to the ER because "their doctor's office was not open," and another 7% because they could not access alternative providers. Relatedly, up to one-third of all emergency department visits could be cared for at an alternative care venue, according to a 2010 paper in Health Affairs. The authors claimed that such savings could amount to about $4.4 billion in national healthcare spending.

Despite these advantages, however, urgent care cannot replace emergency care. It would be best if you choose a suitable facility based on the medical concern.
