About Dr. James Chan
Dr. James Chan was born and raised in Orange County, California. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. His detail-oriented approach to dentistry earned him the Hanau Prosthodontic Award and honorary membership in the Omicron Kappa Epsilon Honor Dental Society. With nearly a decade of clinical experience in California, Dr. Chan brings both precision and heart to every patient he treats.
Growing up with two dentists in his family, Dr. Chan developed an early appreciation for the profession and a love for working with his hands. Before entering dentistry, he briefly worked in occupational therapy, where he taught courses in introductory sciences and martial arts. That teaching background shaped the way he practices today—he believes every patient deserves a clear, thorough explanation of their diagnosis and treatment options. He also gives back to the profession as a mentor for pre-dental students at UC Irvine, helping guide the next generation of dental professionals.

This was an atypical 1st visit. They took X-rays but had difficulty and re-did several times. The machine also brushed my face a couple times which made me nervous since they’re swinging the arm around to get the right angles.
They didn’t do a basic cleaning, saying that they don’t usually do them since they don’t know what they’ll find (never heard that before) and they were running behind (this seems like the real reason). Very strange. They said they don’t call to notify patients beforehand that this is their policy.
They wouldn’t clean my night guard for liability issues which I guess I understand.
The dentist’s bedside was below average; he wasn’t very friendly or communicative. He said I had a very small cavity but since it was just 1 he wanted to have me watch it instead of fill it. Not sure if that’s typical, or if he just didn’t want to do it since they were behind schedule. Maybe he was having an off day.
Fortunately, they didn’t send a claim, so I can find a new dentist.
