About Dr. Karina Acuna Malo

Dr. Karina Acuña, originally from Monterrey, Mexico, brings a rich background in restorative dentistry to 5 Star Dental Group in San Antonio, TX. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) where she also completed a three-year residency and a master's degree in restorative dentistry. Before relocating to the United States, Dr. Acuña spent five years practicing in a private clinic under the mentorship of a respected dental practitioner. In 2014, she and her husband, Dr. Gilberto Tostado (Dr. Gilbert to his patients), moved to San Antonio to advance their skills at the University of Texas Health Science Center where Dr. Acuña earned her second Doctor of Dental Surgery and completed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. This extensive training prepared her for complex dental procedures, including implant placement, molar extractions, and digital dentistry. Together with Dr. Gilbert, she is dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized care as part of the skilled team at 5 Star Dental Group.
By being an out-of-network provider your treatment is not dictated by an insurance carrier contract, which means your treatment is personalized to your needs and what is most beneficial to you and not dictated by your dental insurance. This allows us to give you the appropriate time needed for your treatment, use the highest quality materials, and have the best team available to help you with your treatment needs without being restricted to lower-quality treatment due to insurance cost restrictions.
As a fee-for-service office, we are happy to accept your PPO insurance plan, and we will work with your insurance to maximize your benefits. Patients will be responsible for what insurance does not cover.

I highly recommend seeing Dr. Acuña. I felt comfortable with her. She heard all my concerns and explained what I needed in a way I could understand. She gave me different possibilities and I didn't feel like she was trying to overtreat me. Her bedside manner was caring and felt genuine. Treatment with her was with ease and painless.

Dr. Acuna evaluated me and referred me to a root canal specialist. She told me what to expect, all the steps of my treatment. They did my crown on that same day. Overall, Five Star Dental offered excellent service, with care and knowledge.

Had a great time with my first cleaning and service at 5 Star Dental Group. They explained everything so well, it almost felt like home. Any question I had they answered. I will definitely be back. 10/10.

Dr. Acuña extracted one of my third molars. She was so Knowledgeable and explained the process with every detail. She was very gentle, yet effective and made sure I was ok along the way. Her assistant, Denise, was very caring and help me ease my nerves through the process.

Dr Acuna was extremely gentle & kind. Instructed me on each step. Took time outs so my jaw wouldn't hurt & gave me MOTRIN to prevent soreness. Denise was awesome! So friendly and comforting. Very knowledgeable. A great team!!!
