About Dr. Monzer Shakally

I'm Dr. Monzer Shakally, founder of Southern Smiles. Born and raised in Syria, I came to the U.S. as a refugee at 17 and settled in Iowa, where I earned my dental degree from the University of Iowa—one of the nation’s top dental schools. After graduating, I moved to Phoenix and practiced under the mentorship of experienced dentists. These early years helped shape my clinical skills and patient-centered approach. But I always dreamed of creating a practice rooted in compassion, quality, and community. That dream became reality in March 2024 when I opened Southern Smiles. We started from scratch—just me, my assistant, and zero patients. Today, more than half of our new patients come through word of mouth, and we’re honored by the trust we've earned. What I love most about dentistry is being part of my patients’ lives—from first visits to growing families. I’m equally passionate about mentoring my team and building a positive, empowering workplace. Outside the office, I enjoy fitness, reading, and modeling—I’m signed with The Young Agency here in Arizona. I’m active on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, where I connect with patients and peers. Professionally, I serve on multiple Arizona Dental Association committees and am a graduate of AzDA’s LEAD program. I also represent Arizona in the House of Delegates and am pursuing my Fellowship (FAGD) through the Academy of General Dentistry.
