About Dr. Terry Akpua
Dr. Terry Chike Akpua is an orthodontist and the founder of SmileCraft Orthodontics, where he provides personalized, comprehensive orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults.
Dr. Chike earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College before completing specialty training in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Case Western Reserve University, where he also earned a Master of Science in Dentistry. He also holds an MBA from the University of Maryland.
Before entering dentistry, Dr. Chike played professional soccer in Europe and North Africa. His experience as a professional athlete shaped the discipline, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence that he brings to patient care.
Dr. Chike takes a comprehensive, airway-aware approach to orthodontics. He believes treatment should go beyond simply straightening teeth. His evaluations consider the teeth, jaws, facial balance, bite function, growth and development, and airway as part of the overall orthodontic assessment.
For growing children, he emphasizes early evaluation to identify concerns involving jaw growth, dental development, bite relationships, and airway-related risk factors. When appropriate, he collaborates with other healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Dr. Chike provides braces, clear aligners, early interceptive treatment, adult orthodontics, expansion therapy, and treatment for complex bite and jaw discrepancies. He takes the time to listen, explain treatment options clearly, and create a personalized plan based on each patient’s needs, goals, and lifestyle.
At SmileCraft Orthodontics, his goal is to combine advanced orthodontic care with a comfortable, welcoming experience where patients and families feel informed, confident, and genuinely cared for throughout their smile journey.
