Lisa Gates, DO, is a psychiatrist in Michigan dedicated to helping children, teens, and their families navigate the complexities of mental health. She attended medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, then completed an Adult Psychiatry Residency at Authority Health in Detroit and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Michigan State University. Dr. Gates is board-certified in both Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry. Even before entering psychiatric training, Dr. Gates enjoyed working with children and adolescents. She has always appreciated and learned a lot from the relationships that she has built and maintained with her patients and their parents/guardians. Dr. Gates feels that children are impacted by their environment and the people who they interact with daily. As such, she believes in a collaborative approach to treatment which includes parents/caregivers, other medical professionals, teachers/school staff, therapists, etc. Dr. Gates prides herself on always trying to be the best advocate she can be for children and their families. Dr. Gates also believes in an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and treatment. Treatment may involve therapy, medication management, or a combination of the two. As every patient is unique, treatment plans will be based on the individual patient and what is best for that patient. Dr. Gates also enjoys the process of educating patients and caregivers on diagnoses and various types of treatment modalities. It is important to her that both the child and their support system feel comfortable with and have a good understanding of the plan moving forward. Dr. Gates prides herself in developing a good rapport with the children she interacts with and takes the time to truly listen to and understand a patient's concerns, goals, and hopes for the future. She maintains a team approach to treatment and always strives to put her patients first. Knowing that seeing a psychiatrist may be stress-inducing for some, Dr. Gates approaches each appointment with kindness and empathy, meeting the patient where they are. She takes a thoughtful, diligent approach to diagnosis and strives to ensure that children and their families feel as comfortable when working with her. In her free time, Dr. Gates enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her cats. She also loves to read (mainly fiction), watch scary movies, listen to music, and travel to northern Michigan. She is also pretty good at trivia.
