Getting to know Dr. Jerrell Mitchell

While psychiatric diagnosis commonly is at the forefront of the physician-patient relationship, my practice emphasizes problem-solving and formation of therapeutic alliance as the pillars of tailored and effective individualized care. My extensive training has provided me with abundant tools to work with and treat any psychiatric condition, but I am particularly interested in management of ADHD, anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. I take a culturally tailored, holistic, and comprehensive approach to psychotherapeutic and medicine management. I have experience working in diverse settings including private practice, correctional facilities, inpatient, and as a consultant. My additional training in addiction psychiatry provides me with the knowledge to treat patients with addictive disorders, co-occurring substance use, and other mental health conditions. I am originally from San Diego, CA. Prior to joining Pacific Coast Psychiatric Associates, I completed both a psychiatry residency and addiction psychiatry fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Science Center of New Orleans. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Sacramento State University, where I played Defensive Back for the Sacramento State Hornets. I earned my Medical Degree at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. I am inspired by the diversity and cultural richness of Californians and I look forward to the rewarding endeavor of helping people of all backgrounds live their best lives. I am a board-certified Adult Psychiatrist and a board-eligible Addiction Psychiatrist with a special interest in treating patients with ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, and substance use disorders.

Dr. Mitchell was more thorough than any psychiatrist I’ve seen before. He has a very kind and calming presence, which is especially important for someone like me who deals with anxiety. He’s incredibly personable and easy to talk to. What stood out the most is how sincerely he listens. You can tell he genuinely cares and wants to understand, which made me feel safe and respected. He takes his time during the appointment, and I never felt rushed or dismissed. His bedside manner is excellent, and I left the session feeling both heard and hopeful. I’m really grateful to have found him!
