Abby Mcferran, APRN

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
PA
I'm Abby McFerran, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and founder of McFerran Psychiatry. I provide thoughtful, individualized psychiatric care for children, adolescents, and adults, with a particular focus on ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, and complex or unclear diagnoses. My approach is centered on understanding the whole person, not just a list of symptoms. I believe that an accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment, and I take the time to explore your history, recognize patterns, and understand how your symptoms affect your everyday life. I have experience working with a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including bipolar spectrum disorders, depression, treatment-resistant symptoms, and ADHD in both children and adults. I particularly enjoy working with people who have struggled to find answers, experienced limited success with previous treatments, or wondered whether their original diagnosis tells the whole story. Medication management is a collaborative process. My goal isn't simply to prescribe medication, but to help you understand your options, weigh the benefits and risks, and find the simplest, most effective treatment plan for your needs. Sometimes that means starting a medication, adjusting an existing regimen, or thoughtfully reducing medications that may no longer be helpful. I also value communication and collaboration with therapists and other healthcare providers to ensure that your care is coordinated and comprehensive. Above all, I want my patients to feel heard, understood, and actively involved in their treatment. Whether you're seeking an initial evaluation, a second opinion, or ongoing medication management, my goal is to help you gain clarity and feel more confident about your mental health care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal is to create a comfortable, judgment-free space where you feel heard, understood, and involved in your care. Our first appointment is an opportunity for me to really get to know you. We'll talk about what brought you in, your symptoms, personal and family history, previous treatments, and what you're hoping to accomplish. I take a thorough approach to evaluations because I believe understanding the bigger picture is essential to getting the diagnosis and treatment right. You don't need to have everything figured out before we meet. In fact, many of my patients come to me because they're unsure about their diagnosis, haven't found a treatment that works, or simply want a fresh perspective. I believe treatment should be collaborative, practical, and tailored to your individual needs. I'll explain my recommendations, answer your questions, and make sure you understand your options. I also believe in using medication thoughtfully, with an emphasis on finding the most effective treatment without unnecessary medications. You can expect honest conversations, careful attention to your concerns, and a treatment plan that we continue to adjust together as we learn what works best for you. Above all, I want you to feel that we're working as a team. You know yourself better than anyone, and my job is to bring clinical expertise, curiosity, and compassion to help you move forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, typically lasting 60–90 minutes. We'll discuss your current concerns, mental health history, previous treatments, medical history, and any other factors that may be affecting how you feel. I take the time to look for patterns and connections that might have been overlooked, especially when symptoms overlap or a diagnosis isn't entirely clear. You can expect plenty of questions, but also plenty of opportunities to ask your own. By the end of our evaluation, we'll discuss my initial impressions and recommendations. Depending on your needs, this may include medication, adjustments to your current treatment, additional assessment, or coordination with your therapist or other healthcare providers. We may not have every answer after one appointment, and that's okay. Sometimes the clearest picture develops over time. Follow-up appointments are generally 30 minutes. During these visits, we'll review how you're feeling, assess your response to treatment, discuss any side effects or concerns, and make adjustments as needed. The frequency of follow-up visits depends on your individual needs. We may meet more often when starting or adjusting medications and less frequently once you're doing well and your treatment is stable. My goal is to provide thoughtful, consistent care that evolves with you, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment.

More information on payments and coverage

McFerran Psychiatry accepts a variety of commercial insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, and select Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, among others. Insurance participation varies by state and specific plan, so coverage will need to be verified before your appointment. If you're using insurance, your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your individual benefits, including any copay, coinsurance, or deductible. For patients who prefer to pay out of pocket, self-pay rates are $300 for an initial psychiatric evaluation and $150 for a 30-minute follow-up appointment. I understand that navigating insurance coverage can sometimes be confusing, and I'm happy to help clarify your options before we meet. My goal is to make the financial side of your care as straightforward and transparent as possible.
