Getting to know Abby Otufale

Hi, my name is Abby, and I’m a Board-Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner based in New Jersey. I specialize in anxiety, bipolar disorder, binge eating disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, and insomnia and sleep-related concerns. With over 8 years of nursing experience and psychiatric training from Molloy College, I bring a compassionate and personalized approach to care. I’m deeply committed to destigmatizing mental health, and alongside my colleagues at Lavender Psychiatry, I’m on a mission to create a world where feelings are felt, respected, and cared for.

What should a new client know about working with you?

PLEASE NOTE, I’M IN-NETWORK WITH AETNA, BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD, HORIZON NJ, CIGNA, MEDICARE, OSCAR, OXFORD, QUEST BEHAVIORAL, UNITED HEALTHCARE. I DO NOT ACCEPT MEDICAID. My style is warm, engaging, and personable. I value forming a strong alliance with each client, and collaborating on all treatment decision-making. I work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and many different walks of life, including students, parents, professionals, trades, service industry, retail, entrepreneurs, creatives and tech experts. Starting treatment can be a scary and intimidating process, I’ve successfully treated many people who are new to psychiatric care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Booking Process: Book your appointment on Zocdoc. My office will email you a self-assessment to ensure I’m able to help you. We'll then reach out to confirm your appointment time. Your First Visit: The initial session is a comprehensive, one-hour evaluation which allows me to understand your current symptoms and difficulties, and learn about important aspects of your past psychiatric, medical, social, educational, and family histories. At the end of the session, we’ll determine the best treatment course. Session frequency ranges from weekly to monthly depending on the type of treatment you’re looking for. If you’re already seeing a therapist, I’m happy to collaborate with them while guiding the medication aspect of your treatment. However, many of my clients see me for both therapy and medication management. My practice, Lavender Psychiatry, is founded and fueled by board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners who create therapeutic journeys that are kind, convenient and transparent so that people can flourish. We have a fantastic team that works together to ensure our clients are well taken care of. This includes our care concierge team who is available 7 days a week between your appointments, to help answer questions and assist with any issues regarding coverage and prescriptions etc. We also have covering providers in case I’m away and an urgent matter arises. I look forward to meeting you and helping you in your journey to a brighter future!

Don’t see your insurance?

It’s common for mental health providers to be out-of-network. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network coverage, so you may get partially reimbursed. Learn more

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

I got nothing out of the appointment and the provider didn’t seem to care about me at all.

She was very helpful.

Unfortunately I was informed half way through my appointment that this practice does not accept patients with a history of substance use disorder because they ‘might not be able to manage the patient if anything were to happen’. It is very unfortunate to hear this as substance use disorder is a mental health disorder recognized in the DSM-V. Also of concern that a psychiatric practice feels they ‘may not be able to manage patients if something were to happen’ as presumably this is actually the basis of psychiatry: preventing ‘things from happening’; yet this practice feels it is unable to do so with certain mental health diagnoses. Very concerning.
