Getting to know Dr. Adam Cox

Dr. Cox first trained as a mental health professional in his late 20s, obtaining a double Master’s degree (M.A. & Ed.M.) in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University, and then further building upon these foundations with a Professional Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (DPsych) at City, University of London. Over the course of thirteen years in practice, Dr. Cox has amassed broad clinical experiences working in a variety of settings, including universities, employee assistance programs, and primary care medical contexts.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Adam Cox is a full-time Psychologist at The Center for Progressive Psychotherapy. He recognizes that, on occasion, we all encounter discontinuities in our psychological health, and can benefit from the sensitivity and empathy of a therapist in such moments. “There’s sometimes this concern that coming to therapy is indicative of some sort of mental illness, but most people are simply grappling with their humanity - with issues common to us all. We all experience fear and anxiety at times. We all form attachments and struggle with the pain of separation and loss. We all find ways of coping during childhood that worked for us back then, but perhaps aren’t quite as functional right now. Whatever issues are currently unsettling your own emotional balance, I’m here to offer a steady presence, shining a light on these shared challenges as we guide you out of choppy waters”.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Dr. Cox offers a non-judgmental, collaborative space wherein he partners with clients to make sense of their current difficulties, explore their emotional reactions, and chart a pathway towards desired changes. “I view therapy as an opportunity to identify and build upon your strengths, and facilitate better relating, both with yourself and others. I find that success is most likely where we operate as a team to figure things out together via a process of constructive dialogue”. Dr Cox’s therapeutic practice weaves together psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, cognitive-behavioral, and multicultural strands, but compassion, curiosity and respect are considered the cornerstones of his approach.

Has been life changing to say the least. Adam was able to recognize patterns in myself that I was unaware off and he was caring, thoughtful yet actionable with his care and treatment.
Dr Adam Cox is a pleasure to work with. Very professional, great communicator, and is always prompt in his responses. Also very attentive to detail.
Dr. Cox is not only professional but also very personable and has been a key part of supporting me day to day. He cares a lot and tailors the session with me and with his help, I feel much more comfortable in handling tough situation and become more confident every day. Thanks Dr. Cox!
He’s amazing. Over the past decade through my 20s, I’ve worked with a few therapists but struggled to make meaningful progress with some deeply complex issues. In less than a year of working with him, we’ve been able to uncover and address the root causes of these challenges, resulting in transformative changes. I’m now in the best mental state of my life, and my relationships—with both others and myself—are thriving. Dr. Cox has been instrumental in helping me achieve this.
I have been his patient for 6+ months. He was always very comfortable to talk to, very personable, and very insightful. He would always provide supplemental studies and reading materials for me per my requests. I really enjoyed his approach to sessions, never pressured to do/talk about anything I didn't want to do/talk about. Highly recommend.
Dr. Cox is fantastic. He is engaging, calm, and very respectful about your decisions discussed in sessions. Also a great resource for anyone suffering from panic episodes
My sessions with Dr. Cox have been so great! He’s an amazing listener and really helps to delve into what I talk about, and offer helpful insights and observations that help me realize common themes that tend to occur in my life. He is very kind and communicative and has been an amazing help to me!

Excellent listener. Asks great questions & follow-ups. Connects dots across topics and sessions to ensure efficient and effective progress.
I've been seeing Adam weekly for several months now; he is warm, non-judgemental and considerate. Adam has taken a flexible approach with me, as I first requested some CBT but later wanted to shift to a more psychodynamic approach. I have found our sessions very helpful to work through challenges and examine their root causes.
Adam's approach touched me and personally helped me a lot. He has a very developed sense of listening and that's the least I can say. Being accompanied by him allowed me to understand not only the origin of certain emotions but also to clarify the why of certain behaviors. It also allowed me to relate my past experiences to the present ones. This without judgment and on the contrary with a lot of compassion and empathy. He also gave me the tools to feel better every day and I'm thankful for that. A truly invigorating experience.
Adam has been a great resource for me. I've experienced many very helpful realizations in working with him. I'm grateful for the rapport we've built and for the work we'll continue to do together.
Great, Adam helped me a lot. I appreciate his support and patience while listening me. He tried his best, I always remember his as a good person.
Adam is a kind, caring professional who takes time to listen to and understand his clients. Highly recommend him if you’re looking for an outstanding service.
Adam is a great therapist. It is easy to feel connected and comfortable with him. He listens intently and kindly and asks the most helpful questions and makes observations that have helped me make a lot of progress.
Adam is an amazing therapist! From the first session he was able to listen and understand. He has helped me a lot over the course of the treatment and is very commited to helping me. Would not hesitate to recommend Adam.
I highly recommend Dr Cox. I am very comfortable talking to him about anything. I feel like I am getting a lot out of my sessions. He is a great therapist and I feel like I am making progress.
Dr. Adam Cox is very easy to talk to. He was very kind and patient with me and I felt comfortable sharing things with him. We worked on specific areas I needed help with. He kept me focussed and I found it incredibly helpful. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Adam Cox is outstanding! He is patient, empathetic, and thoughtful. He is very easy to talk to and listens with no judgement. I'm thrilled to be working with him!
I had several CBT sessions with Dr. Adam Cox in 2021 for mental health issues. He is excellent at listening, very empathetic and really helped to get to the root of my problems and identify what exactly was the root cause. I am now on my way to healing my unresolved trauma from childhood, and could never have been able to do so had I not been working with Dr Cox. I highly recommend him.
Loved getting the chance to work with Adam, not only is he highly professional and clearly knows what he’s talking about, but he is also such a nice person and has a very good skill for clearly listening and understanding the issues you are dealing with, which makes him by far the best of the best! Adam really is an open book, you can come to him with any issue you have, and his down to earth nature mixed with his advanced knowledge allows him to show you how you can break down your issues step by step. He really does provide you with lots of hope and opens up a clear path for progressing and getting better. Couldn’t wish for a better person to work with.
Dr. Adam Cox is an amazing and attentive therapist. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a therapist you can easily trust.
Great experience! Dr. Cox was attentive, and works with you to meet your goals. His demeanor is warm, calm, and remains engaged in conversation. I truly felt seen, heard, and understood.
