He performed his general surgery internship and Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery residency at the Albany Medical Center and a Rhinology fellowship at Shadyside Hospital, now part of the University of Pittsburgh. He also has completed a Master's degree with distinction in Aeronautical Science, specialising in Human Factors from the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. For more than thirty years, Dr. Shapiro has treated and operated on thousands of patients and has been the medical director of two accredited sleep laboratories and two allergy centres. Dr. Shapiro has an ATP Pilot rating, is an Aircraft Commander with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and is also an FAA senior medical examiner who actively consults with the aerospace industry. Dr. Shapiro is an avid reader, cyclist, and speaks many languages. He is very happily married and has two wonderful children.
