What should a new client know about working with you?

It's important to me that my client's feel comfortable, otherwise how can we discuss sensitive or difficult topics? I spend time in the first session getting to know clients and sharing about the process of therapy. Therapy sessions are my client's times- and they can come however they are comfortable. No need to dress up if you're more casual! If you love dressing to the nines, that's great, too! Sit on the floor, couch, chair, or even snuggle up in bed. Whatever place is private and comfortable for you is great. We'll spend our first session going over whether we are a good fit, and I like to understand what you're looking for/what is bringing you in to therapy so I can understand your experience. I work collaboratively with clients to develop goals/focus for therapy. And... things may change as we work together. I generally check in each session and want to make sure my clients get to talk about what is important to them. If there isn't a specific topic, I can suggest one. I work with clients to help them discover what areas are important to them and what needs to change for them to feel better.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We check in and go over the past week for the client. I work with them to identify what is important. I can be very structured and goal oriented, or more casual and find direction together. You don't have to have all the answers- we will find them together. I will make suggestions or point out tools or patterns for clients to consider. I expect my clients to disagree if something doesn't sit right, and also if they don't want to talk about something, we change topics. Collaboration is the foundation of how I work. Sessions look different for each client and sometimes from session to session. There may be laughter or tears or anger. All are welcome!
