About Dr. Addisu Mesfin

Dr. Mesfin is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeon with 10 years of practice experience. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Drexel University, completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University, and pursued a fellowship in Spine Surgery at Washington University, St. Louis, Barnes-Jewish Hospital. His areas of special interest, expertise, and research include benign and malignant primary spine tumors and metastatic spine disease, adult scoliosis and kyphosis, spinal stenosis and disc herniations, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), spine trauma, minimally invasive surgery, and cervical disc replacement and laminoplasty. An active and widely published researcher, Dr. Mesfin has authored more than 200 book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Neurosurgery Spine, Spine, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has also been an invited lecturer in over 15 countries. Dr. Mesfin’s approach to patient care focuses on educating patients and their families about their diagnoses and treatment options using the latest research, empowering them to be partners in decisions about their care. He exhausts all non-surgical treatments before recommending surgery. He is fluent in English, French, and Amharic. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps in the U.S. and Afghanistan, achieving the rank of major. When not working, Dr. Mesfin enjoys spending time with family, traveling, long-distance running, and tennis.
