“I had an excellent experience with Dr. Gerard - he was kind, compassionate and had great sense of humor. He was patient when I felt ambivalent about medication. Probably the most helpful was some of the cognitive/behavioral skills he taught me. I don’t think I realized how helpful until later. ”

“Dr. Gerard was an exceptional gift to me, during a particularly trying time in my life. I "interviewed" quite a number of providers before I chose Dr. Gerard, and was so grateful that I did. I have absolutely NO reservations giving him my highest recommendation. He was kind, an excellent listener, incredibly responsive, and always always super helpful with getting me to grasp a more positive vision of my life and future. I will forever be grateful to him, and only wish that I hadn't moved so I could still have the opportunity to work with him!! ”

Getting to know Dr. Adriel Gerard

I bring my sense of humor and upbeat personality to every session, and I am deeply dedicated to helping you feel better. I am a board-certified psychiatrist who provides medication management and psychotherapy to adults. We can work together to address your everyday challenges as well as the issues that cause you stress, fear, and depression. My therapy approach is most influenced by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which focuses on the "here and now" to address your thought processes and behaviors and help you feel happier. I offer flexible appointment times, including weekends, at my private office in Brooklyn Heights. My priorities are effective treatment, patient satisfaction, and responsible/ethical care. I am a skilled psychopharmacologist but also strongly believe in the healing power of talk therapy. I specialize in treating anxiety and mood disorders and have extensive experience helping with a wide range of conditions, including relationship, work, and body-image issues. I understand that seeing a psychiatrist can be daunting and strive to make it a comfortable experience, especially for those who have never met with a professional before. I earned my Doctor of Medicine degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo, and completed my residency in psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have experience working with adults from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. I prioritize communication (if you contact me, I will respond to you promptly) and provide evidence-based care. If you book an initial appointment, I may call you before the visit to discuss your case if I have any questions or concerns.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial session is a comprehensive 75 minute evaluation during which I aim to understand your current difficulties and will ask you questions about psychological symptoms, medical history, and social background. The frequency of appointments ranges from weekly to once every one to three months, depending upon a number of factors, including the type of treatment you are seeking. If you are currently meeting with a therapist, I am happy to collaborate with your therapist to coordinate your care.

Gerard was incredibly supportive and helpful in a very difficult time in my life. I can not recommend him highly enough. Phenomenal doctor and very kind human being, which is hard to find in the world of medicine.
Dr. Gerard is very knowledgeable, understanding, and has always offered incredible advice and solutions. He has helped me see situations from new perspectives and helped with any issues I needed to work through when I saw him. Would highly recommend!
I worked with Dr. Gerard while going through some heavy periods of grief. He was so kind, open, and supportive through truly the worst time in my life and gave me exactly what I needed. I could not recommend him enough!
I highly recommend Dr. Gerard. It can be difficult to find a psychiatrist that is also a great talk therapist and Dr. Gerard is both. He listens well, gives thoughtful advice, and explains any prescribed medication thoroughly. He's good at giving practical advice for immediate and targeted goals while also focusing on the long-term and the big picture.
Dr. Gerard was very patient, kind, and experienced. I have struggled with OCD my whole life and it’s not easy working with someone like me honestly, but Dr. Gerard showed nothing but patience and care. He always showed concern for my mental health and allowed me to make up my mind regarding what I would be comfortable taking or trying to reduce my OCD. He’s down to earth which is also a plus.
