Akwetey Akrong, PMHNP-BC, takes a holistic approach to psychiatry and enjoys working with each patient’s strengths to help them achieve better mental health. He is a compassionate, active listener, and his goal is to get every patient to their highest level of functioning. As a Marine Corps veteran, Akwetey previously worked in inpatient mental health with veterans suffering from a wide range of mental health disorders. He is also a pastor with extensive experience in family counseling. Akwetey earned his Master’s in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from Walden University. He enjoys working with both adolescents and adults suffering from depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety, psychotic disorders, and more. In every case, he educates his patients and helps them understand the healing process.

After seeing Akwetey several times in the last couple of months, I can say with confidence that this is the best mental health provider I've ever seen. He diagnosed me correctly after years of seeing docs who had no clue. I finally on the treatment track that I've needed for 30 years. I was always diagnosed with anxiety, and most meds would just make me tired and unmotivated. Akwetey diagnosed me with ADHD and and explained that ADHD is the fuel that adds to the fire of anxiety. Wow, who knew someone could open your eyes in this way after years of being clueless and somewhat helpless?
Moreover, he's kind, humble and down to earth. He is not a provider that attempts to be "right". He listens to YOUR needs first and gently guides you on the right path.

I was initially nervous about scheduling a visit with a mental health specialist. I've heard horror stories about inattentive doctors who dismiss your concerns to rush you off a call, or foll a prescription without getting to know you. Dr. Akwetey Akrong was the opposite. He made me feel comfortable speaking about my health concerns. He thoroughly explained his reasonings, soothed my concerns and gave me a concrete follow-up plan. He even shared his vacation schedule so I wouldn't feel left in the dark in the days to come. He was also friendly and encouraging. I can't recommend him highly enough.

He was the first doctor that heard me my concerns. I’ve lived this way my whole life and because I was successful people always said I was fine. I was told by other doctors I was depressed but I simply just wanted to function. Well he knew actually how I felt and offered a treatment to help manage all of struggles and I am forever grateful. I’m not sure what to expect but happy to have a team of people who listen.

I felt like he did not respect my previous diagnosis. Asked multiple times when I was diagnosed with certain conditions and told him adolescents and couldn't provide exact names. He then questioned me as to why I certain scripts were dosed the way they were.... How would I know? isn't that the providers job/responsibly and why I'm coming to you. I felt like he questioned and judged my diagnosis due to taking controlled medications that have been prescribed for quite some time, gave the impression that I was drug seeking. It made me feel ashamed and embarrassed like I was doing something wrong. I expressed my ongoing battle with depression including inpatient hospitalization. And he did the typical "well maybe you should exercise especially since you're overweight" that's when I completely felt disappointed and discouraged. I knew then I would never come back to him.

I highly recommend Akwetey Akrong, PMHNP-BC. I've never had a more relaxed, open, and insightful experience discussing my mental health with a provider. Before my appointment I was nervous, but he listened attentively to my concerns without judgement, explained things to me that I didn't quite understand, and made me laugh. I was very comfortable.
