Getting to know Dr. Alexander Abramowicz

I earned my B.S. in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and received my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Maryland with experience working in outpatient mental health clinics and various college counseling centers throughout the DMV. I work with adolescents and adults addressing concerns such as depression, anxiety, identity issues, adjustment and life transitions, grief and loss, relationship challenges, and finding meaning and purpose in life. I am particularly passionate about discussing and exploring multicultural concerns related to race, gender, LGBTQ identity, socioeconomic status, religious affiliation, and nationality. I employ an integrative approach to mental health and wellness, utilizing psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral, and humanistic or existential theories. I believe lasting change is driven by a warm therapeutic relationship, emotional attunement, and the development of insight. As a therapist, my goal is to help you work toward a state of awareness, a sense of empowerment, and a feeling of fulfillment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients can expect after the first session to feel heard, validated in their emotions, and have someone who makes them start to feel understood. Clients can also expect to work towards gaining a greater sense of awareness regarding their own patterns of behavior and how these behaviors impact their relationships. Finally, patients will, hopefully, take away that in a safe, therapeutic space, they can also be challenged to grow as individuals, thus leading to change in several different parts of their lives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a typical session, I strive to work with each individual to "meet them where they're at," by understanding your perspective on what is happening in your life, we can then start to work together to understand whether or not whatever it is that may be causing you distress, pain, guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, or any other emotional or psychological experience is a common theme or pattern within the context of your life. I always aim to work collaboratively with every client I see, with the primary focus being about how the relationships you have now may be impacted by your past. Everyone has a past, and by understanding the impact our pasts have on our current lives, we start to see what may work well, and what are some areas in which we struggle. I want individuals or couples who are working with me to feel comfortable being themselves with me in therapy sessions, where you feel heard, understood, and appreciated for who you are.
