Getting to know Dr. Alexander Cole

Mental health challenges - whether difficulties with mood symptoms like depression, overwhelming anxiety, pervasive trauma symptoms, or other emotional difficulties - can profoundly limit our ability to live satisfying, meaningful lives. I work with adults of all ages coming with a variety of concerns, from individuals that have no mental health treatment history to those that have been in treatment for most of their lives, and have broad expertise in the treatment of most psychiatric conditions. I believe strongly in building a collaborative treatment relationship that involves both of us working together to improve your wellbeing. As both a psychiatrist and training psychoanalyst, I incorporate both medication management and psychotherapy into my treatment. I utilize a comprehensive, individualistic approach that emphasizes your personal experience, history, and concerns to develop a unique, individualized approach to your treatment. If you're looking for someone to partner with in addressing your emotional health - rather than being quickly shuffled through an appointment - please schedule an initial consultation! I'm generally able to schedule new visits quickly. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to achieve your goals.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I utilize a comprehensive and individualized approach in my care. While the symptoms of emotional difficulties may be similar, your story and life circumstances are unique and are often critical to understanding the difficulties you may be experiencing. In contrast to the impersonal, "cookbook" approach that is so common in mental health treatment, I work to understand your unique needs and situation to develop a treatment plan that both of us can be supportive of. My approach is also highly collaborative. Rather than telling you what should be done, I try to act as an advisor, sharing with you what I think is likely to be helpful and providing you information about treatment options while keeping in mind your own goals for treatment and willingness to engage in various forms of treatment and, ultimately, leaving the decision about treatment to you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial consultation is a 75-minute appointment that focuses on learning about you and your concerns. During this visit, we will discuss your current symptoms, your goals for beginning (or continuing) treatment, and aspects of your life that may be contributing to how you are feeling. At the end of the visit, I will share my thoughts about my understanding of your concerns and recommendations for treatment. These recommendations may include medication management, psychotherapy, or other interventions. I believe strongly in using a collaborative treatment approach that involves both of us working together to improve your wellness, and I tailor my treatment recommendations to both your concerns and what forms of treatment you are interested in pursuing. I offer initial consultations virtually and in-person. After our initial visit - and if both of us agree that continuing treatment together is likely to be helpful - we will continue to meet to discuss how you're feeling. For medication management visits, I typically meet with people monthly to start; in some cases, I may discuss meeting more or less frequently depending on your symptoms. Follow-up visits are typically 30 minutes but can be longer or shorter depending on your needs. If you are interested in meeting for therapy, I like to meet at least once a week and, in some cases, more frequently. Psychotherapy visits are 50 minutes. For medication management visits, I am available to meet both virtually and in-person. Psychotherapy visits must occur in person; while I am available to meet virtually on an intermittent basis if needed, I offer psychotherapy visits with the expectation of meeting primarily in-person at my office.

Ongoing session: $150 for 30 minutes

More information on payments and coverage

I charge a flat rate of $300/hour irrespective of the type of treatment you are receiving. I am considered out-of-network with all insurance plans and, as a result, you will be responsible for the full cost of the visit at the time of the visit. However, I am happy to provide you with the paperwork needed to request out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance provider if this is a benefit of your insurance plan. Initial consultations are for 75 minutes ($375). Most follow-up visits are 30 minutes ($150) but, in some cases, follow-up visits can be as short as 15 minutes ($75) or as long as 45 minutes ($225) depending on your needs. The fee for psychotherapy appointments is $300 for 50 minutes of session time and an additional 10 minutes of non-session time. All patients are required to have a credit card on file with the practice. This card will be used to pay for services (if it is your chosen payment method) and for no-show/cancellation fees. If you cancel an appointment within 48 hours of the scheduled appointment time or no-show to a scheduled appointment, you will be charged the full fee of the visit, including initial consultations canceled prior to the visit. I do not double-book appointments and am unable to recoup the time I set aside for your visit when canceled on short notice. I have a limited number of reduced fee appointment slots available.
