Getting to know Dr. Alexander Obolsky

Navigating major life changes—like my experience as a refugee from the Soviet Union and going through a divorce—has given me a real understanding of the emotional challenges that come with big transitions. These experiences taught me empathy, which is central to my practice and inspires my commitment to helping patients find strength and healing. With more than 30 years as a doctor, professor, and psychiatrist, I base my practice on medical science, and a thorough understanding of how the brain and body connect. This background helps me approach each case with careful diagnostic precision. In my roles at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and as a professor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, I provide care that is modern, effective, and collaborative. I specialize in a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. My extensive clinical experience also gives me unique expertise in complex cases where medical and mental health needs overlap. As a forensic psychiatrist, I work where medicine and law meet. My specialized training lets me evaluate the psychological impact of injuries, trauma, and stress for legal purposes. For instance, I can assess someone's mental state for a court case or provide expert opinions on complex psychiatric issues. This perspective, combined with my clinical experience, is a vital part of my professional dedication. My practice is for patients seeking a complete, thoughtful, and medically integrated approach to wellness. To ensure this level of care is defined by your needs—not insurance constraints—I operate on a private-pay basis. This keeps clinical decisions between us. My team provides all necessary 'superbill' documentation for you to seek any available out-of-network benefits.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Finding the right mental health provider is a big step. Here's a look at what you can expect from my practice and how we'll work together. I believe in the power of talk therapy. Our work is a partnership where I'll listen carefully to your story and ask questions that help you think about your own life. While I may offer some insights, my main goal is to help you see patterns you might not be able to notice on your own. Beyond my professional training, I also draw on the strength I've gained from my own life experiences. We'll work together as medical detectives to understand your unique situation. As a doctor, I'm specially trained to look at the close link between your physical and mental health. This complete view allows me to approach your care from a unique perspective, especially in complex cases. From there, we'll create a treatment plan just for you. This might include talk therapy, modern medication management, or a combination of both. I am connected to respected institutions like Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. These connections mean that the care you receive is held to the highest standards, based on solid research. It also gives me access to a network of top specialists, so you can be confident that you are receiving high-quality, comprehensive care. Choosing to seek help is a very brave thing to do. Our first session is a safe space for you to share your story and your goals. We'll explore your past, understand your present, and start building the foundation for a healthier future. I look forward to meeting with you and starting this journey together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My practice is for patients who are serious about their mental health and are seeking truly personalized experience. By keeping my patient panel deliberately limited, I can provide a highly personalized and accessible level of care. Our journey begins with a comprehensive, unhurried initial evaluation reserved for a full 90 minutes. This allows me to conduct a thorough psychiatric interview and, if needed, collaborate with a staff psychologist to provide detailed psychological and cognitive testing. My goal is a precise diagnosis and a deep understanding of your unique situation, which may take more than one session. From there, our psychotherapy visits are a full 60 minutes, ensuring we have ample time to engage in meaningful work together. The focus of our work is your personal growth, and we will collaborate closely on setting goals. My commitment to you is to provide a dedicated level of thoughtful, medically integrated, and patient-centered care.
