About Alexandra Cunningham
Allie is a board-certified Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, born and raised in Washington, D.C. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Science in Nursing in Women's Health at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN (Go Dores!). While at Vanderbilt, she traveled to China and studied traditional Chinese Medicine. During her master's program, the main focus of her research was on HIV-positive women and the decision-making process surrounding pregnancy.
Prior to joining the team at Virginia Family Medicine, Allie worked in two different women's health practices in the DMV area-a maternal fetal medicine practice in Silver Spring, MD, and an OB-GYN practice in Arlington, VA.
Allie is excited to bring her women's health background to Virginia Family Medicine. She provides gynecological care to women at all stages of life-adolescence through menopause. Her clinical interests include contraceptive counseling, LARC (IUD and Nexplanon) insertions, assessment and treatment of menstrual irregularities, family planning and preconception counseling, and the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and vaginal infections.
Allie is passionate about providing women with safe, evidence-based, and personalized care. One aspect of her job that she enjoys the most is building relationships with her patients and engaging in shared decision-making to optimize their health, as well as educating women about their bodies so they can make informed healthcare decisions.

Wonderful provider but unprofessional office staff. I arrived at my scheduled appointment and was told that the provider was not there. The receptionist said that patients had been contacted to cancel, but I never received a notification of the cancellation and even received an appointment confirmation in the morning. However, the office never notified me of this and the girls working were loudly talking about their online purchases while I'm trying to check in. I'm going to look for another provider, which is unfortunate because Dr..Cunningham is fantastic!

I want to stay proactive with my health and was gearing up for a bit of a battle. With others I've been told to not worry, that my cancer chances are at the same risk levels as others, etc etc. But Allie was incredibly understanding and actually gave me credit for staying ahead of things. It was a quick and easy appointment to get the referral for additional screening that I was requesting.

I think Allie is a good nurse. She cares for her patients, but she is not equipped with adequate trauma-informed care skills to care for anxious people. Whether or not she is a good fit for you depends on who you are as a patient, so just be mindful of that!

Great experience with the provider! She was thorough in taking my medical history and explained everything she was doing and took her time.
The nursing staff, on the other hand, seemed very rushed and were asking questions way too quickly - I could barely get an answer out before she would ask another question and this is where important info can get missed.

Great office, fantastic bedside manner, and great care provider. She’s compassionate and patient and really took time to understand my health history to provide relevant guidance.
