Dr. Alexandra Himel, APRN, RN, DNP

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
MA
I bring a dual perspective, with training in both mental health counseling and psychiatric medication management. I specialize in treating ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, Borderline Personality Disorder, and trauma. My approach to prescribing medications is thoughtful and collaborative, and I take time to get to know you as a person so we can develop holistic treatment options that fit your needs. I have experience working with individuals who are starting medication for the first time, as well as those looking to optimize their current medication regimen. If you’re interested in combining therapy with medication management, I offer both together. I typically provide a short-term, intensive CBT-based, solution-focused treatment model that lasts about 16 weeks, while also offering longer-term care when needed. At this time, I primarily work with adults, though I have extensive experience managing medications for children and adolescents.

Getting to know Dr. Alexandra Himel

I bring a dual perspective, with training in both mental health counseling and psychiatric medication management. My approach to prescribing medications is thoughtful and collaborative, and I take time to get to know you as a person so we can develop holistic treatment options that fit your needs. What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients should know that I take a thoughtful, collaborative approach to care. I believe the most effective treatment starts with taking the time to understand you as a whole person—your experiences, strengths, and goals—not just your symptoms. During our first few sessions, we focus on building a clear understanding of what you’re going through and developing a treatment plan that feels practical and supportive. I have training in both psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management, which allows me to integrate these approaches when helpful. Some clients come specifically for medication support, while others prefer to combine medication with therapy. My therapeutic style is primarily person-centered and incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), along with elements of mindfulness and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). I aim to create a space that feels supportive, collaborative, and focused on helping you make meaningful progress. My goal is to help you develop tools that improve daily functioning and well-being, whether through short-term focused work or longer-term support when needed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with a comprehensive initial evaluation where we discuss your current concerns, personal history, and goals for treatment. I typically use the first one or two sessions as a consultation period so we can get to know each other and determine the best approach moving forward. Throughout treatment, we regularly review progress, adjust strategies as needed, and focus on building practical tools that support long-term well-being and daily functioning. My goal is to create a collaborative and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable discussing challenges and making meaningful progress.
