Getting to know Dr. Alfred Forrester

You have been referred to my office by Zocdoc, which helps patients find an appropriate local physician?in my case, an adult psychiatrist?for psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing management of various psychiatric conditions. Aside from being the referral source, Zocdoc is not involved in the care you receive once you become my patient. I completed my Doctor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital. I then completed both my residency in Psychiatry and a fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The initial psychiatric evaluation involves my learning as much about the condition for which you have been referred as possible. When speaking to my administrative assistant, you will be asked whether you have received psychiatric care previously; whether you have been hospitalized; what psychiatric medications you may have been prescribed and/or are currently taking. We will attempt to obtain pertinent records from other providers with whom you have worked in the past. We make it clear that we will not accept a new patient who is currently under the care of another psychiatric provider, except under one of the following conditions: (1) You are requesting this evaluation as a "second opinion", which may help to clarify the condition for which you are already receiving treatment; or to provide other therapeutic options for the management thereof. Following this evaluation, it will be your decision whether to continue under the care of the other psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner; or to transfer your care to this office. (2) You have already terminated your care with the other psychiatric provider, such that there is no possibility that you might be receiving care from two such providers simultaneously.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Currently, the majority of patients whom I treat are seeing me for the pharmacologic management of a variety of psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder); anxiety disorders; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; and psychotic disorders. Many of these patients may be working with a therapist already: hence, the therapist has recommended that you be assessed for medication management. After the initial evaluation, I will make recommendations for the management of your condition, and there will be follow up sessions, or "med checks". If you are not already in treatment with a therapist, I may recommend that you seek same; and, occasionally, my schedule may allow me to accept a new patient for ongoing talk therapy, with or without medication management.

I can highly recommend Dr.Forrester. He took me in as a new patient on very last minute notice. This can be a difficult situation because it's intimidating as a new patient to go over your relevant mental health information when it is a lifetime of content. At no point did I feel rushed, I felt I had all the time in the world to tell my story. In a country where seeking and receiving healthcare is so cold, bureaucratic, and impersonal that if you didn't before then you'll need a doctor after the experience, Dr.Forrester is a rare gem, someone who actually went into the field to help people. I am grateful.
Brilliant man, takes his time to hear what you have to say . Spends individual time with each person He sees even if that means he runs a bit behind .
