Allison Ussery, AMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
CA
The provider is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and is currently working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Their current employer is Allison Ussery AMFT #157106. I’m called to provide therapy that sheds light on what you find the most important and to help you learn to explore what you find difficult. The work we do together can focus on grief, identity loss or struggle, chronic overthinking, difficulty with family, burnout, or prejudice at work, home, or school. I also specialize in polyamorous or non-monogamous relationships and spent much of my time writing, advocating, and caring for this community. I believe in equity and decolonization. I use equitable and decolonized approaches that aim to address systemic discrimination and historical injustice, and to bring to light those who are stigmatized or otherwise invisible. My joy comes from working with those who are different from me, learning from you as much as you learn about yourself in therapy. I believe in honoring your experience. Some parts of your life might be difficult or feel shameful to bring to light. I've worked with people who struggle with anger and resentment, intense grief, ancestral and spiritual connections, and many of those on the fringes. All are welcome.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I've worked with adults and couples/ non-monogamous relationships of all ages, 18 to 65, from all walks of life. You may feel like “too much,” “not enough,” or something mixed up in between. My work with the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities has been incredibly meaningful. Or maybe you identify, as some of my clients have, those who are sex workers, genderfluid, nonbinary, or polyamorous. Those who don't identify as such are equally welcome and worthy of care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach for individuals and couples focuses on what you (and your partner(s) feel in the moment, in the room, and in your environment. We will look at what things mean to you as you walk in your own individual shoes, not what you could or should be. If you do feel like you should or could be "better," we can work on what you want to improve, but we can also explore why that's important to you while learning to be a little kinder to yourself. We call this approach existential, humanistic, gestalt, relational, and affirming.
