Dr. Amer Smajkic has a unique life story that begins in the country of Bosnia, where he grew up and graduated from medical school at the University of Sarajevo. When the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina began, he was assigned to a vascular surgery residency program to serve his country. He treated people on the front line and in the hospital, while in constant risk of death by bullets, bombs, hunger or thirst. For months, he was saving lives by assisting in hundreds of surgical procedures, often by candlelight, with no electricity or water. During these experiences, he learned how satisfying it was to treat people with war injuries. He also learned that healing came not only from surgeries, but also from long conversations with patients at night, while they listened to explosions throughout the city. He lived in constant fear for his safety and finally left the country to save his own life. He arrived in Chicago as a Refugee of War, survivor of Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide, sponsored by St. Luke’s Episcopalian Church in March 1994. For the first few months, he helped other refugees and their families establish themselves in Chicago. In June of 1994, he turned his outreach work into a profession by becoming the first mental health counselor in a newly formed Refugee Mental Health program for Bosnian s. In 1995, he established a professional academic relationship with the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Illinois at Chicago, with Drs. Stevan Weine and Ivan Pavkovic as mentors. Under their leadership, he participated in numerous research projects involving Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Dr. Smajkic received training in general psychiatry at University of Illinois at Chicago and Rush University Medical Center. He completed child and adolescent psychiatry fello

Great , welcoming very calming modern office, all fees are explained before the first visit, very knowledgeable always looking to understand and help. This doctor spends a lot of time with a patient, he is not pushing medication, he is also doing therapy and always available for questions.

Dr. Smajkic is very punctual, his demeanor a welcoming one. He has a few weeknights available to accommodate younger patients that are tied down to the normal academic weekday time-table, after-school activities or sports schedules. His hours and central-city location are extremely convenient, right across the street from Northwestern Hospital, so close to parking and easily accessible on so many public transportation routes - his proximity to Mag Mile is a huge plus, too. Very impressed!

I think this doctor way overcharges for the "services" he provides. He basically had me fill out two questionnaires to "diagnose" me and asked me very few questions about why I was there. He is just looking to make money on as many appointment as possible.

Dr.Smajkic is very caring and wants to help you. He is easy to talk to and has offered some good advise to improve our mental health. We were so fortunate that we were able to get an appointment right away. We know we have a long road ahead of us, but having him as our Dr and resource is very comforting. We drive an hour into the city to see him and there is plenty of parking that allows us to get to our appointment easily. Well worth the drive to know you are working with a dr that cares.

Dr. Smajkic is a terrific doctor. I have been seeing him for about 6 months now and could not be happier with my experience. He was very straightforward about everything (costs, expectations, etc.) before my first appointment. He truly cares about his patients and it shows. He listens, explains things clearly, and takes the time to answer any questions that I have. He consistently seeks my input and feedback regarding my plan of care and adjusts things accordingly. My only regret is that I didn't find Dr. Smajkic sooner.

This was my first visit to doctor Smajkic. I was very pleased with the interaction overall. The doctor was very friendly which helped put me at ease. After we discussed my issues he laid out my treatment options and asked for my input on what I think would work for me. It was very collaborative rather than, "here, do this." I get the feeling he realizes any treatment is only as good as a person's ability to follow through with it.

I've seen many psychiatrists and Dr. Smajkic is one of the best. He's quite intelligent and pragmatic. He strongly encouraged me to do DBT along with medication. Since then, I've made noticeable improvement. If you are motivated to get better, then Dr. Smajkic will help you. If you're looking for someone to do nothing but prescribe medication and treat you like everyone else, seek another doctor. I'm very happy with my experience with Dr. Smajkic. He's fantastic!
