Getting to know Dr. Amita Marks

I am a licensed psychologist specializing in depression, anxiety, Trichotillomania, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Adjustment Disorder, relationship issues, and stress management. I understand that no one technique is appropriate for every individual, so I prefer an eclectic approach to provide clients the necessary tools to improve their lives. However, my primary approach is evidenced-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Using CBT, I help clients develop improved insight into their thought processes and how they can impact their emotional experience. I recognize that it requires courage and willpower to seek therapy. I therefore seek to improve self-efficacy and empower people to assert control over their own mental health. Helping clients believe in themselves, become more attuned to their thoughts, and utilize mind over mood affords me enormous gratification. I graduated from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York with a Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology and have conducted and published research examining the cognitive profiles, parenting attributes, and developmental trajectories of preschoolers with ADHD. During my training, I worked with children and adolescents and their parents to manage behavioral difficulties through parent management training. During my pre-doctoral internship, I provided individual and group therapy to children and adults with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries. While completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weil Cornell Medical Center, I worked with school- aged children and adolescents with anxiety, school phobia/avoidance, OCD, Social Anxiety Disorder, and depression using exposure therapy and cognitive restructuring.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Are you always a little bit afraid that an anxiety attack is waiting around the corner? Have you been hit with surprise anxiety more times than you can count? I know exactly what you're feeling: the pounding chest, the shortness of breath; Or the feeling that you are "not good enough," sad, lonely. Regardless of what the symptoms are, we can work together to give you the tools to make positive changes in life so that you can live the way you deserve to live.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to help pt gain insight into their own thought process and empower their mind to achieve what they thought was not attainable. I will work side by side to help find strategies to manage your anxiety and stress as well as overcome depression and hardship. Let's work together to take control over your thoughts, instead of allowing your thoughts to control your emotions.

Amita has helped me learn more about myself and helped me tremendously dealing with social anxiety and depression. Also she is comforting and easy to talk to. Highly recommended
Dr.Amita Marks is the most wonderful therapist who specializes in cognitive restructuring that can help patients like myself with severe anxiety and depression. She asks the right questions and has a very warm nature which allows you to easily open up to her. She is also flexible and truly cares about her patients mental health. I love her and she has significantly helped my mental health in more ways than one.
Dr Amita helped (and is still) helping me through really hard times. Not only does she listen with care, she’s is a Dr that genuinely shows up despite of her busy schedule if I’m going through a particularly challenging time. She’s the kind of therapist you need to have as part of your support system.
I can genuinely say that Dr. Marks has helped me cope and understand difficult situations that I’ve been dealing with. It was tough for me as a first time patient to therapy, but her honest and sensible approach helped me feel like it was ok to breathe and allow the process to happen. I am so grateful of the important coping skills she has taught me, and I highly recommend her services.

She is amazing Great listener.. no judgement Talking to her felt like i was talking to a friend who also has great expertise.
Amita Marks has been an incredible guiding light in my life ever since I started therapy with her two years ago. I completely credit her with helping me get through some of the most difficult times in my life and I’m so grateful for all the help she's given me. Amita is empathetic but also logical in helping me tackle my problems, and she’s provided me with great tools to cope with difficult situations on my own. I’ve become so much more empowered and self aware as a result of my sessions with her. In the past, I struggled to be completely honest with therapists due to the fear of being criticized or misunderstood, but Amita is so warm, understanding, and non judgemental. She creates a completely safe environment during her sessions where she is supportive and always builds me up no matter how much I am struggling at the moment. Thanks to her, I know that even in my darkest moments that I will get through them and that I have the strength to heal myself. I feel more confident and in control of the issues I face in life because she’s taught me how to unlearn negative thought patterns and break out of bad habits. I was at one of the lowest points in my life when I first started seeing her - I struggled with depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia, abusive family relationships, and various self destructive habits. She taught me how to use CBT to deal with intrusive and negative thought patterns and as a result, has significantly helped me re-wire these thought processes. Amita validates my feelings but also holds me accountable so that I am always moving forward. Even if I relapse or slide back into self destructive behaviors, she reminds me that these mistakes are part of the process, because you can learn and become more self aware from them. She recently encouraged me to start journaling, which has helped me identify triggers and slow down my impulsivity. I know that I will always face unexpected situations and curveballs in life, but thanks to Amita I feel like I have the tools to cope with whatever happens to me. Amita is an amazingly kind and intelligent person that I am so grateful for having in my life, I wish everyone in the world had access to a therapist like her!!
