Getting to know Dr. Andrew Anson

Andrew is a board-certified psychiatrist and certified psychoanalyst, as well as Teaching Faculty at Tulane University Medical School and the New Orleans Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Faculty of Health Sciences, completed his residency in psychiatry at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, and holds a Certificate in Psychoanalysis and Psychiatry from the William Alanson White Institute. Licensed in New York and Louisiana, Andrew offers psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, with and without medication management, both in person and via telehealth, from New Orleans' French Quarter.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I ask all patients to fill out a brief intake form for me to get to know them better before I confirm our appointment. I help a lot of patients navigate whether they need medication or therapy or both, and a lot of time getting to know what is going on with someone before making any assumptions. That being true, I would be the wrong prescriber for someone looking for a refill of stimulants, sedative hypnotics, or other controlled substance medications, and because of restrictions cannot prescribe these medications via telehealth or out of state.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, I take initial evaluations seriously and sometimes spend several sessions getting to know what is really going on with someone. I spend an hour with all new patients and all my follow-up appointments are 45 minutes.
