Getting to know Dr. Andrew Scherbarth

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with more than a decade (10+ years) of experience working with clients across the lifespan. I primarily serve adults and young adults (late teens) via telehealth. Often, people seek therapy because of difficulty with life changes-adjusting to new family situations, jobs, schools, relocation, burnout, or grief. However, I am skilled with treating anxiety, panic, depression, anger issues, social anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and ASD. People seek therapy with me because they want their life to "fit better," without so much stress and difficulty. They want to be more fulfilled and find relief from that stress. Even when people aren't 100% sure of what to do, we start figuring out a plan that will work through therapy. Clients typically seek therapy when something in their life isn't as expected or hoped. It's as if their life doesn't "fit right." They have thoughts and feelings, such as stress or emotional distress, impacting different areas of life. Sometimes stress comes with a big change, making adjustment hard. Emotions and thoughts may interfere with functioning with friends, family, work, school, and personal downtime. Sometimes these feelings affect people physically, causing racing heart, light-headedness, stomach aches, headaches, muscle tension, or insomnia. My job is to help people figure out what is happening and untangle the knots tying them up. Patients gain relief and do more of what they care about to make life fit better. My favorite part of the therapy process is seeing people take steps forward to feel more comfortable and satisfied. It's not always easy to make changes toward managing stress and life, but people do see progress along the way. The effort pays off.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In practice, I balance being Client-Focused with research supported methods to help people reach their goals. I'm curious, open-minded, collaborative, and responsive. I'm always open to questions, comments, or concerns. I aim to make goals that clients want to work towards, and that they approve of any plans we make to get there. I am also guided by a number of empirically validated practices that have a history of proven outcomes (Behavioral Therapy, CBT, ACT, ERP, and Strengths-Based Therapy). That way, when we are making plans together about how to achieve their goals, they are based on evidence-based practices.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

It all starts with the intake process leading up to the intake session. First, book an appointment on my calendar. Then, my billing company emails you to complete forms, questionnaires, & provide billing information. It can sometimes take a few days to confirm insurance. It's easier if you give yourself at least a full day to finish that process. Sometimes, it can take 2-3 days to verify insurance. The very 1st session is an intake session. (If the client is still a minor, the 1st session involves the parent too). This 1st session gives me a chance to find out more about current symptoms, overall well-being across several areas of life, and history in these areas. Then, clients decide on goals that we want to work on in future sessions. By the end of the first session, I won't have a lot of recommendations to start on immediately, but we will have a clear direction on what we want to accomplish. In future sessions, we discuss what is happening for them, & work on plans to move towards these goals. Clients learn more about the nature of thoughts & feelings, as well as how they impact their behavior & ultimately, how these effect their lives. Clients contribute to this process by discussing their own observations as well. When making plans, I want to make sure that we choose steps that clients are willing to do to reach towards their goals. Even small steps are ok. We work at a pace that clients choose, so they can make changes more confidently. Each follow-up session, we talk about how their symptoms have been & any steps they've made since the last session, as well as discussing and planning the next moves forward. I want people to feel heard, so I'm always open to questions, comments, or concerns. People end sessions with hope & ideas of what they want to do next. The process of therapy ends when a client feels that they have met their goals, & that they are ready to manage things confidently on their own.

Dr Andrew is kind and thoughtful in how he helps patients identify their issues and then make actionable plans to work on those issues. He also keeps diligent notes, so he can always pick up right where the last appointment ended.
I have had a great experience with Dr. Scherbarth. He provides me with a place to have open communication and has helped me develop skills to better understand myself and my feelings. His down-to-earth, straightforward approach really helps me unravel complex emotions and navigate my reactions to them. Highly recommend contacting Dr. Scherbarth if you are looking for a Psychologist.
Andrew is great. He takes the time to listen. During our sessions, I’ve been able to talk about everything that has been bothering me—from stress at work to personal challenges—and he listens with such empathy that it feels as though I’m speaking to a compassionate friend rather than just a therapist. His ability to create a safe and supportive environment has encouraged me to open up more than I ever thought I could.
Dr. Andrew is fantastic! Amazing therapist who offers some deep insights when needed, and is an amazing listener when you just need someone to complain to. I've been seeing him regularly for probably 6 months, and he's been now someone I rely on for advice and support. He's also very adaptable, I told him on the first session or two that I want someone who I can talk to as if we were friends, and he complied, but is also willing to accommodate your needs. Couldn't ask for a better therapist.
I have been seeing Dr. Andrew for several months to help deal with a family illness and work stress. Dr. Andrew helped me get the acute issues under control, and has also been extremely helpful in providing me with strategies to deal with stress, difficult conversations, and managing emotions from a difficult line of work. Dr. Andrew’s advice and strategies have been equally helpful during down times and when times are good, and I’d highly recommend him both to people who are currently dealing with difficult situations and to those who are simply looking to be equipped for how to deal with those difficult when they come up.
Dr. Andrew's sessions have been life changing. He taught me how to think about my own thoughts and feelings in a way that directly led to transformations in my life. His strategies to deal with anxiety, racing thoughts, and negative feelings are actionable and approachable. He listens and is patient with you. This is honestly the first time in my life that therapy has led to a very noticeable positive change in my life. I would highly recommend Dr. Andrew to anyone!
Dr. Scherbarth is very caring and compassionate psychologist who made sure my son was comfortable during his therapy sessions. When I told Dr. Scherbarth that my son might be too nervous and unwilling to talk to a stranger, he even dressed down for the first visit and played an ice-breaker game with my son to help him open up and talk about his problems. I highly recommend him.
