About Dr. Andrew Tobon

Andrew Tobon, MD, is a highly skilled, board-certified general urologist and urologic surgeon, and we are thrilled to have him here at Urologic Surgeons of Washington as of 2023. Dr. Tobon is dedicated, as we as a practice are, to seeing patients as soon as possible and offering the very best care and treatment options.
Education
Dr. Tobon’s resume boasts an impressive educational background. He attended Columbia University for his undergraduate work and then earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed both his general surgery and urology residencies at Baylor College of Medicine as well. Between 1997 and 2018, he imparted his considerable clinical knowledge to medical students and residents as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas, San Antonio.
From 1997 to 2018, Dr. Tobon also practiced as a partner in a well-respected urology group in San Antonio, TX. After that, he moved to the DC area, where he was part of a local health system’s urology department for another four years.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Tobon specializes in treating several urologic diseases and conditions and has considerable experience in managing kidney stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He also offers no-scalpel vasectomies.
He is the co-medical director, along with Dr. Engel, of our unique urology urgent care practice that aims to give patients greater access to same-day specialized urologic treatment, allowing them to skip the generic care typically received at a traditional urgent care facility.
Dr. Tobon was born in Cali, Colombia, and immigrated to the United States at age 11, becoming a citizen 12 years later. He is fluent in Spanish and enjoys spending his free time with family, reading, and cycling.

Great office and I would definitely go back if I needed urology care. I was referred for a follow-up after a persistent kidney infection initially treated via urgent care. Dr. Tobon was somewhat dismissive of my experience with recurrent UTIs, though I know he didn't mean anything by it. If you are educated on your health issues and feel comfortable having a discussion with a doctor, he's a great option. If you are looking for someone to be more empathetic and holistic, I'd probably go elsewhere.

This was my first visit with Dr. Tobon, so it's a bit early for me to offer a full recommendation, but I appreciated his straightforward approach. He was direct and clear during our conversation, which I value. He scheduled me right away for a biopsy, which I didn’t find surprising, though I did wonder if other steps like imaging might typically come first.
That said, I’m not a medical professional, and I recognize that he may have seen something that justified moving quickly. Since this was a new situation for me, I probably would have appreciated a bit more explanation about the urgency and next steps—but to be fair, I also didn’t know exactly what to ask in the moment.
Overall, I felt that he was confident and decisive, and I’m approaching this with an open mind and trust in the process so far.
