Getting to know Dr. Anna Shanabrook

I am a warm and caring licensed psychologist specializing in working with adolescents, college-aged individuals, and adults facing a variety of mental health diagnoses, including anxiety and depression, learning disabilities, mood disorders, school, work, bi-cultural, parenting, and relationship challenges, as well as the complex effects of surviving relational and other severe forms of trauma (sexual, physical, emotional, and neglect). Additionally, I have a keen interest in supporting individuals with complex medical issues. As a mother, I am particularly invested in women’s mental health, including perinatal and postpartum concerns, as well as the challenges that accompany the journey toward and within parenthood. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Pace University, which has equipped me with a strong foundation to provide compassionate and effective care. As an observant Jewish woman, I personally understand the experience of balancing a deeply valued traditional worldview with that of a diverse and pluralistic society. Many people live such lives, struggling to reconcile various identities and facets of themselves that may sometimes seem in conflict. When faced with these bi-cultural challenges, I am here to help.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My clinical approach is largely psychodynamic from an attachment-based and relational perspective, meaning that I focus on helping you explore your past relationships and experiences to recognize patterns of how they are influencing and affecting your life now. In this way, we will be able to affect the changes you are looking for in your life. I also utilize techniques from various other modalities as needed, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), as well as a trauma-informed approach. Beginning therapy can be an overwhelming experience, and I understand the courage it takes to take those first steps. I prioritize providing a warm, empathetic, and safe space for my clients, where they feel they can share without judgment as I find that to be the foundation to successful treatment. Having worked within diverse populations, I aim to provide culturally-responsive therapy inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, religions, abilities, socioeconomic statuses, and sexual orientations. I earned my doctorate at Pace University and completed my predoctoral internship working with individuals across the lifespan at New Alternatives for Children. I have experience working in community organizations, outpatient clinics, and schools, as well as within the child welfare system.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Though clients may start therapy with specific goals in mind, I start each session in an open-ended fashion so that you can bring up whatever is on you mind, whether it is related to the original goal or not. I also emphasize open communication, collaboration, and feedback, if there is something I had said that did not sit well or you feel that treatment is not progressing, I encourage you to share it so that we can work through the problems together. Depending on what you bring up on a given day and how you feel, sessions can be geared towards a combination of providing compassionate and empathic support, comfort, and guidance as well as exploring past and current stressors, problem solving, and practicing new skills. Just as no two people are alike, so too no two sessions are quite the same. People change from day to day, and so I strive to tailor treatment to meet both your needs and where you are at in a given time. I look forward to speaking with you and starting this journey together.
