Annika Alvarez, NP

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
CA
I'm a dual board-certified nurse practitioner, certified as both a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), and I help adults navigate their mental health concerns. I most often work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and other mood disorders, and I'm also very comfortable treating ADHD and sleep disorders. I work with men and women from many backgrounds, including those managing serious mental illness or substance use alongside other concerns. My background spans more than 15 years in healthcare, including primary care, community mental health, and psychiatric practice. I've served on an Assertive Community Treatment team supporting young adults with serious mental illness, provided primary care to patients with chronic kidney disease, and conducted comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and ADHD assessments. My family practice training helps me consider how your physical and mental health affect each other, so your care reflects the whole picture. My approach combines careful, collaborative medication management with supportive psychotherapy, so you feel heard rather than just prescribed a pill. I'll take time to understand your history, explain your options in plain language, and answer your questions. When medication is part of your plan, I start thoughtfully, review potential benefits and side effects with you, and make changes only with your input. Together we'll monitor how your treatment is working and adjust it as your needs change. My goal is to create a calm, judgment-free space where you feel comfortable being honest about what you're going through. You're the expert on your own life, and I'll treat you as a partner in every decision about your care. Whether you're seeking help for the first time or looking for a fresh perspective, we'll build a practical treatment plan together.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note, I don't accept EAP programs. Think of our work together as a true partnership. People often come to me feeling drained by anxiety, sadness, mood shifts, past trauma, difficulty concentrating, or restless nights, and some have seen other providers without ever feeling truly understood. From our very first conversation, I want you to know that your perspective guides every decision we make. Your first appointment is a thorough psychiatric evaluation. We'll talk about what led you to reach out, the symptoms you've noticed, your medical and medication history, your routines and relationships, and the goals that matter most to you. You can open up at your own pace. Because I'm trained in both psychiatric and family practice, I also look at how sleep, physical health, stress, and substance use may be influencing your mood. Before we wrap up, I'll walk you through my thoughts and your options in straightforward terms. You'll find my style warm, honest, and practical. When medication could be helpful, I'll explain my reasoning, what changes you might notice, and any side effects to watch for, and the final choice is made together. I prefer to begin carefully and adjust based on how you're truly feeling day to day, rather than relying on a standard formula. I also know that medication is just one part of feeling better, so we'll talk about sleep habits, stress, daily routines, and other everyday factors that support your progress. Follow-up appointments give us time to review how you're doing and fine-tune anything that isn't working. Your questions and candid feedback are always welcome, and if something feels off, I genuinely want to know. Most of all, you can count on a calm, respectful, and judgment-free setting. I care for adults from all backgrounds, including those managing serious mental illness, PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD, and substance use. Whatever brings you in, my aim is for you to feel listened to.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please note that I do not accept Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits for visits. My care centers on psychiatric evaluation and medication management, and I follow a clear, step-by-step process so you always know where we are and what comes next. Our first session is the most in-depth. I'll learn about your current symptoms, when they started, and how they affect your work, relationships, sleep, and daily life. We'll also review your mental health history, past medications and how you responded to them, medical conditions, family history, and any alcohol or substance use. When helpful, I use standardized screening questionnaires for concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and mood disorders to add structure and accuracy to the picture. From there, I bring together everything you've shared, along with my training in both psychiatric and family practice, to reach a thoughtful diagnosis. Because physical issues like thyroid changes, sleep problems, or medication side effects can mimic or worsen mental health symptoms, I consider these too and may recommend lab work or coordination with your primary care provider. I'll explain my conclusions in plain terms and answer your questions. Next, we'll create a treatment plan together that is built around your goals. If medication is a good fit, we'll discuss the options, expected benefits, and possible side effects before you decide. I'll also share practical recommendations around sleep, stress, and daily routines. If you already see a therapist or counselor, I'm glad to coordinate so your care stays connected. Follow-up sessions are shorter and focused on your progress. We'll review your symptoms, how you're tolerating any medication, and what has changed since we last met, then adjust the plan as needed. As you improve, visits typically become less frequent. Throughout the process, you'll have a voice in every decision, and you can expect honest, respectful, judgment-free care.
