Annika Alvarez, NP

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
CA
As a dual board-certified nurse practitioner, I hold certifications in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and I support adults working through their mental health challenges. Much of my work focuses on anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and other mood disorders, and I'm also experienced in treating ADHD and sleep disorders. I see men and women from a wide range of backgrounds, including people living with serious mental illness or substance use in addition to other concerns. I bring more than 15 years of healthcare experience across primary care, community mental health, and psychiatric practice. My work has included serving on an Assertive Community Treatment team for young adults with serious mental illness, providing primary care for patients with chronic kidney disease, and completing comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and ADHD assessments. Because of my family practice training, I look closely at how your physical and mental health influence one another, so your care takes your whole health into account. I pair thoughtful, collaborative medication management with supportive psychotherapy, because you deserve to feel listened to, not just handed a prescription. I'll take the time to learn your history, walk you through your options in clear, everyday language, and answer any questions you have. If medication becomes part of your plan, I begin carefully, go over possible benefits and side effects with you, and only make changes with your input. We'll keep track of how your treatment is working together and adjust it as your needs evolve. I want our time together to feel calm and free of judgment, so you can speak openly about what you're experiencing. You know your life better than anyone, and I'll treat you as a true partner in every decision about your care. Whether this is your first time seeking help or you're looking for a new perspective, we'll create a practical treatment plan as a team.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note: I do not accept EAP programs. I see our work together as a genuine partnership. Many people come to me worn down by anxiety, low mood, emotional ups and downs, past trauma, trouble focusing, or sleepless nights, and some have worked with other providers without ever feeling fully understood. From the start, I want you to know that your voice shapes every decision we make. Our first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We'll discuss what prompted you to reach out, the symptoms you've been experiencing, your medical and medication history, your daily routines and relationships, and the goals that are most important to you. You're welcome to share at whatever pace feels comfortable. With training in both psychiatric and family practice, I also consider how sleep, physical health, stress, and substance use might be affecting your mood. Before we finish, I'll share my impressions and explain your options in plain terms. My style is warm, direct, and practical. If medication might help, I'll walk you through my reasoning, the improvements you may notice, and side effects to watch for, and we'll make the final decision together. I like to start cautiously and make adjustments based on how you're actually feeling day to day, instead of following a one-size-fits-all approach. Medication is only one piece of feeling better, so we'll also look at sleep habits, stress, daily routines, and other everyday factors that help you move forward. Follow-up visits give us a chance to check in on your progress and refine anything that isn't working well. I always welcome your questions and honest feedback, and if something doesn't feel right, I genuinely want to know. Above all, you can expect a calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental space. I treat adults from all walks of life, including people living with serious mental illness, PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD, and substance use. Whatever brings you in, my goal is for you to leave feeling truly heard.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please be aware that I do not accept Employee Assistance Program benefits. My practice focuses on psychiatric evaluation and medication management, and I use a clear, structured process so you always know where we stand and what comes next. Your first appointment is the most comprehensive. I'll ask about the symptoms you're experiencing, when they began, and how they're affecting your work, relationships, sleep, and everyday life. We'll also go over your mental health history, medications you've taken and how they worked for you, any medical conditions, family history, and alcohol or substance use. When appropriate, I use standardized screening tools for concerns like anxiety, depression, ADHD, and mood disorders to add structure and precision to the assessment. Next, I combine everything you've shared with my training in both psychiatric and family practice to arrive at a careful diagnosis. Physical factors such as thyroid changes, sleep issues, or medication side effects can mimic or intensify mental health symptoms, so I take these into account and may suggest lab work or coordination with your primary care provider. I'll explain my findings in plain terms and answer your questions. Then we'll develop a treatment plan together, built around your goals. If medication seems like a good fit, we'll review your options, the benefits you can expect, and potential side effects before you make a decision. I'll also offer practical suggestions for sleep, stress, and daily routines. If you're already working with a therapist or counselor, I'm happy to coordinate so your care stays connected. Follow-up visits are shorter and centered on your progress. We'll check in on your symptoms, how you're tolerating any medication, and what has changed since our last visit, then fine-tune the plan as needed. As you feel better, appointments usually become less frequent. At every step, your input guides our decisions, and you can count on honest, respectful, nonjudgmental care.
