Dr. Anthony Hansen, PhD

Psychologist
2900 Paces Ferry Rd, Building D, Ste 203, Atlanta, GA
I utilize a collaborative approach grounded in interpersonal processes combined with elements of feminist and relational theories. My theory of practice is guided by tenets of cognitive theory and acceptance and commitment therapy. I have extensive clinical training working within varied mental health settings, including clinical experiences with veterans in a VA system, collegiate mental health, and on collaborative interdisciplinary treatment teams. I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology, MEd in Professional Counseling, and Bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia, and completed a Fellowship in Health Service Psychology at Emory University. Although I have a thorough and comprehensive history of psychological and psychoeducational assessment and evaluation, I am not conducting evaluations at this time. Professional interests include relationships and relational problems, self-esteem and self-hate, trauma and recovery, identity concerns (including but not limited to sexuality, diversity in gender, atheists and other types of secular individuals), and veterans. I also have an extensive history of work with young adults and collegiate mental health. I welcome clients of all ages, backgrounds, and identities. My practice is affirming of all genders, sexual orientations, ethnic identities, and religious identities, and is inclusive and welcoming of all intersections therein. I am a highly trained Counseling Psychologist who genuinely enjoys helping others and welcomes any individual seeking therapeutic counseling services to foster healing or deeper understanding. I welcome anyone ready for a counseling relationship or simply curious about psychotherapy. I am licensed in the state of Georgia, and because I operate virtually through 100% HIPAA-compliant software, I welcome clients from across the state, not just in Atlanta. I?m an Atlanta therapist, but I can begin the process of therapy while you remain in any place that makes you feel comfortable.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In my experiences as a psychologist, I have found that many encounter difficulties in their lives for a wide variety of reasons, as some are unhappy with themselves, unhappy with the trajectory of their lives, have doubts about their future, or are struggling with a deeper meaning to the experience of life. I provide a helpful space to explore those questions, and many others, while experiencing a supportive, nurturing, and challenging relationship unlike any other in life. It is my job to focus on you, to listen to you, to validate you, and when appropriate, gently challenge you. We can set goals together and devise a working path to healing and/or understanding, and we are free to revise that plan as other experiences, feelings, or insights may appear in the room. I welcome you here, and I applaud anyone who chooses the company of a therapist, for nothing more than making a definitive choice that they are worthy of help and are ready to take action to “get better.”

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is typically spent exploring and gaining understanding, in a very diagnostic manner. I will ask questions about many different things, and at the conclusion I hope to have clarity about what exactly is ailing you, and where we can further explore or process in our time together. This process is collaborative, although I have expertise, I am not the expert in you. I encourage my clients to take agency in the things they explore and to choose the direction of the content in their time with me. My client's are encouraged to visit as much and as often as they see fit, and I hope to continue to offer flexibility in scheduling. This process is about empowerment and I work to support and validate all in their quest for healing and insight.

More information on payments and coverage

If you choose to use an Aetna insurance plan, you will be directed to use Headway, a billing and support company that I use to manage insurance panels. If you utilize Headway, you will make payments (your co-pay) through the Headway portal and not to me directly. Unfortunately, I do not accept insurance for couples/marital therapy.
