Getting to know April Dvorak

Head Well is an integrative psychiatric practice focused on enhancing your overall well-being through individualized care and meaningful outcomes. I hold a Master’s degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from Eastern Kentucky University, which informs my approach to providing comprehensive and personalized treatment. Please note— We do not provide traditional talk therapy, but various therapeutic modalities are incorporated into my practice. We are not in-network with OHP, Medicare, or Medicaid at this time.

What should a new client know about working with you?

April Dvorak, PMHNP-BC, is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and the founder of Head Well – Integrative Psychiatry, a mental health practice based in Eugene Oregon. She helped found and serves as the President of Projects on Purpose Inc (POPI), a nonprofit serving the seriously mentally ill. She has extensive experience in inpatient and outpatient settings and a wide range of patient populations, including serious mental illness (SMI), corrections, forensic, adolescent, and geriatric psychiatry. April moved to Eugene, Oregon in 2022 and served as an attending at Oregon State Hospital before leaving to start Head Well which has grown to employee more than a dozen people and serves hundreds of Oregonians in achieving their mental health goals. After years of practicing in the public sector and clunky, bureaucratic institutions, April wanted to build a model based on efficiency and long-term, sustainable solutions. She believes in making sense of things and working through tough problems. April started Head Well – Integrative Psychiatry in hopes of doing both. Her clinical approach is integrative and functionally rooted. She is fascinated by how personality structure and emotional and behavior patterns account for much of how we view and interact with the world. People co-create their realities, and understanding oneself is the key to a cohesive, productive, and meaningful existence. April is passionate about mental health advocacy and maintaining humanity, rationality, and integrity in psychiatry and social services. She loves to learn and recently obtained certificate from Integrative Psychiatric Institute (IPI) as a Ketamine Medical Provider. She was recently awarded Eugene’s top 20 under 40.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

People seek new psychiatric providers for a variety of reasons, but regardless of the impetus, the process can be challenging and anxiety-provoking. You should be congratulated for taking the steps to care for yourself properly! If you chose to move forward with our practice, after requesting a new patient appointment, someone from our office will reach out to verify your insurance and/or payment information. You will receive several forms and consents. These must be completed prior to your appointment. Please note, we will not be able to move forward with the appointment without receiving this information in a timely manner. The information will help structure your comprehensive evaluation. During our first meeting, we will discuss your psychiatric history and symptoms and other aspects of your life like your work, routines, diet, relationships, and physical activity. Short, validated self-assessments will be used to help track progress. If interested, personality assessment can be incorporated which may provide insight into patterns and issues helping to guide our path forward. We will establish long- and short-term goals and build a holistic plan for achieving those goals which may include traditional psychiatric medication, supplements, and supportive wellness interventions/practices. Typically, we will follow up in 2-4 weeks to assess progress and adjust and realign our path forward. As we gain better control of symptoms and you start to feel better, we will incorporate more lifestyle and behavioral interventions to maximize the benefits of treatment, support lasting change, and optimize wellness. Along the way, appointments will become less frequent, possibly every 3 or 6 months, depending on the type of treatment.
