Getting to know Dr. Aubrey Bruce

Hi, I am Dr. Aubrey Bruce. I received my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. I also hold a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Denison University. I completed my APA-accredited predoctoral internship at the Catholic University of America. I have also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina, specializing in psychiatric rehabilitation and couples therapy. I have also received supervised training in substance use, community mental health, college counseling centers, and career counseling. After receiving my doctorate, I worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. I also spent several years working intensely with law enforcement officers and their family members. In addition to clinical work, I have worked as an adjunct professor at George Washington University and Virginia Commonwealth University. I am licensed to provide psychological services in Washington state, California, Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. I am also recognized as a licensed psychologist by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use an individualized approach with each of my clients that is tailored to help you meet your therapy goals. In therapy, we use strategies from evidenced-based approaches including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Process Therapy, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. For all clients, my therapy approach is trauma-informed, multi-culturally focused, and affirming. I also believe that you should never have to guess what your therapist is thinking about you. If you are ever curious about my reaction to a therapy conversation or what I think about something, just ask me! I am a direct and compassionate therapist and believe that sharing my thoughts in therapy can help strengthen our therapy relationship and improve the collaborative process. Sessions are conducted using a Telehealth platform. You will get an email with a link to the session. You simply click on the link and I will be there at our scheduled time! It feels like a typical video-call. Telehealth sessions tend to be most productive when you are in a space where you feel that you can speak freely and openly.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the first session, I ask you a lot of questions about your experiences to understand your therapy goals and how to work through the unique struggles that get in your way of reaching your goals. Typical therapy sessions feel very conversational and I generally allow clients to guide the session as to what topics feel most important to them. In these conversations, I am also working to help you better understand your struggles, examine your thoughts and feelings around your current problems, and use evidence-based strategies to help change your approach to whatever the problem is. That might be thinking about it differently, changing the intensity of the feelings around it, changing the way you relate to other people, or coping with your feelings in a different way. In therapy sessions I will also give you lots of feedback to help you understand the psychology of both your struggles and how we work through it; in other words I try to help you learn how to "be your own therapist". Sometimes I ask clients to complete homework between sessions. The type of homework is based on your unique treatment plan, and can include things like journaling, practicing different coping techniques, doing nice things for yourself, and challenging yourself to do things that are a little uncomfortable!
