Getting to know Avery Navas-Harlow

I come from a collaborative perspective, meaning I want to work together with you and your values to shape treatment in a way that works best for your needs. The goal is curiosity first which means I may question your thought process often but I believe therapy offices are brave spaces where we can challenge our patterns and grow beyond them. I offer a lot of humor and a relaxed professional self. I believe that if I ask my clients to be authentic with me then it's only fair for me to offer as much authenticity as I'm professionally able to in kind.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a queer and non-monogamous therapist which inherently shapes the way I view the world and my therapeutic approach. Because of my background I often challenge social and systemic norms in order for my clients to have more conscious choice about themselves and their values. My clients do not have to have the same identities as me, most of mine currently don't, but I find this perspective allows clients to be more active in the decisions they make in their lives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me is very conversational so it does not look strict or directive. It is not my place to tell my clients what to do so the sessions usually focus on expanding on my client's personal goals and desires, and collaboratively building solutions to the problem.
