Avis is a passionate and enthusiastic dual Board-Certified MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-C with over 35 years of experience in direct patient care and demonstrated expertise in building rapport and relationships with patients and families. Avis earned a Master's in Family Nursing from the University of Phoenix and a Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She is seasoned in psycho-social evaluation, physical assessment, diagnosis, care-planning, and disease-state management. Avis is self-motivated to work independently and is a lifelong learner gifted with emotional fortitude, empathy, and tenacity in the face of a myriad of patient circumstances and environments. Her clinical experience includes Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care, Inpatient Pediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry, Pediatric and Adult Home Care, Pediatric and Adult Home Infusion, Hospice and Palliative Care, Clinical Coordination, Clinical Education, and Sexual & Reproductive Medicine.
Born and raised in inner-city Chicago, Avis grew up in a ?melting pot? of children and families with diverse cultures, languages, and religions. She has dedicated her life to serving patients of all cultures, religions, and walks of life. Avis welcomes all cultures and minorities, all races and religions, people of color, and the LGBTQIA+ communities.
She loves all things artistic and creative, everything related to nature, philosophy, reading, swimming, cooking and baking, yoga, learning, and any pursuit connected to a deeper search for meaning in life. Avis is down-to-earth and witty, often described as having an "old soul" and a calming voice. She especially enjoys bringing her education, persona, and life and career experiences to the patients she serves.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I use an integrative, eclectic and holistic trauma-informed therapeutic approach weaving together person-centered therapy, judicious medication-management and theories about the mind-body-spirit connection.
My practice, at Balance Psychiatry & Mental Health, is both an Art and a Science and that means I will combine my wisdom, creativity, compassion, and healing spirit with the most up to date Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in psychiatry, psychopharmacology and psychotherapeutic modalities to partner with you to meet your personal and unique psychiatric and mental health goals.
