Getting to know Britney Roysden

Britney Roysden is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) who provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychiatric care to patients across the lifespan, including both pediatric and adult populations. Her clinical approach is deeply grounded in trauma-informed care, reflecting a sophisticated understanding of how adverse life experiences, systemic stressors, and cultural contexts influence mental health and treatment outcomes. Born and raised in Tennessee, Britney developed a passion for psychiatry while serving rural and underserved populations throughout the Appalachian Mountains. With over a decade of medical and psychiatric experience, she has worked in diverse environments including emergency rooms, state hospitals, correctional facilities, and outpatient settings. Britney earned her degree from the University of North Dakota, focusing on a dual approach that integrates medication management with therapy-based interactions to help patients better cope and reframe their thinking. She specializes in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, PTSD, and substance use disorders. Britney is highly experienced in conducting thorough psychiatric evaluations and developing individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs and specific stage of life. This professional background with diverse populations across various cultural and socioeconomic settings has allowed her to foster a culturally responsive, respectful, and adaptable approach to care. Britney believes in a holistic, collaborative, and patient-centered treatment model that prioritizes safety, empathy, education, and shared decision-making. Her primary goal is to support patients in achieving symptom stability and long-term mental wellness while honoring each individual’s lived experiences, personal values, and cultural identity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you work with me, you can expect a supportive, respectful, and collaborative environment. I believe mental health care works best when it feels like a partnership. My role is not just to prescribe medication, but to truly listen, understand your experiences, and work with you to create a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and values. My style is warm, direct, and nonjudgmental. I strive to create a space where you feel safe being open about your thoughts, emotions, and challenges. I take time to provide education about diagnoses, medication options, and therapeutic approaches so you can make informed decisions about your care. I welcome questions and believe transparency is essential to building trust. My approach integrates evidence-based medication management with therapeutic techniques such as cognitive-behavioral strategies, supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused interventions. I consider the whole person — including lifestyle, relationships, culture, stressors, and physical health — not just symptoms. Above all, I want you to feel heard, empowered, and actively involved in your mental health journey. Seeking care is a meaningful step, and I’m honored to walk alongside you in that process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment. During this session, we will review your current concerns, psychiatric and medical history, family history, lifestyle factors, past treatments, and goals for care. I take time to ask thoughtful questions to ensure I understand the full picture — not just symptoms, but how those symptoms affect your daily life. When appropriate, we will discuss diagnostic results and review treatment options, including therapy, lifestyle changes, and medication. If medication is recommended, I provide clear education about risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected outcomes. My goal is for you to feel informed and comfortable with any treatment decisions. Follow-Up Visits: Follow-up sessions are focused, collaborative, and goal-oriented. We review how you’ve been feeling, assess symptom changes, monitor medication effectiveness (if prescribed), and address any side effects or concerns. These visits also include therapeutic support. I practice brief, solution-focused and cognitive-behavioral–informed therapy during medication management appointments, helping you develop coping strategies, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and build emotional resilience. For clients who need more in-depth weekly psychotherapy, I discuss options and can provide therapy within my scope or coordinate care with a licensed therapist for more intensive work while I continue medication management. Ongoing Care: Treatment is not one-size-fits-all. As you progress, we adjust the plan together. Some clients need short-term support during a stressful season; others benefit from longer-term care. My approach remains flexible and individualized.
