What should a new client know about working with you?

When families come to see me, I want them to feel welcomed, understood, and supported. My style is collaborative, compassionate, and thorough. I take time to listen carefully—not just to the symptoms, but to the story behind them. Every child and teen is unique, and I aim to understand the whole picture: their developmental history, personality, strengths, struggles, family dynamics, and environment. I value input from both parents and children, and I see our work together as a partnership where everyone’s voice matters. My approach blends traditional psychiatry with a functional and integrative perspective. This means I look not only at emotional and behavioral symptoms, but also at underlying factors such as sleep, nutrition, medical conditions, and stressors that may be affecting mental health. Treatment may involve talk therapy, parent guidance, skill-building, lifestyle adjustments, supplements, or medication management when appropriate. I take care to explain recommendations in clear, accessible language, reviewing the risks and benefits so that families feel confident in making decisions. During sessions, I incorporate supportive therapy and coping strategies. With children, I often use play, stories, or creative activities to help them feel comfortable expressing themselves. With teens, I focus on creating a safe space for honest conversation, where they can explore their thoughts and emotions without judgment. Parents are included in the process so they feel equipped with tools and strategies to support their child at home and at school. Above all, I strive to create a trusting, respectful relationship where children and families feel empowered. My goal is not only to help manage symptoms, but to foster resilience, self-understanding, and growth. Working together, we can build a treatment plan that supports your child’s mental health today and lays the foundation for long-term well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When I work with children, teens, and their families, the first session is usually longer so that I can really get to know your child and understand your concerns as a parent or caregiver. We will talk about your child’s strengths and challenges, their current symptoms, medical history, developmental milestones, school experiences, family history, and daily routines such as sleep, nutrition, and social interactions. I also like to meet with the child directly (in a way that feels comfortable for their age) to hear their perspective and build trust from the beginning. This comprehensive approach helps me see the whole picture, rather than focusing only on symptoms. After the initial evaluation, I will share my impressions with you and explain any diagnoses we are considering. Together, we will discuss a range of treatment options that may include therapy, parent guidance, medication management, nutritional or functional approaches, or a combination of these. I believe strongly in collaboration—you will always be part of the decision-making process, and I will explain the risks, benefits, and alternatives clearly so you feel informed and supported. Follow-up visits are shorter and focused on progress. We check in on how your child is responding to the plan, review school or home updates, and make adjustments as needed. I also incorporate supportive talk therapy into these visits, helping your child develop coping strategies and a stronger sense of self. With younger children, sessions may include more play-based interaction, while with teens the focus is often on open conversation and building insight. Parents are included in the process so that you feel confident in how to support your child at home and in school. My goal is for every session to feel safe, collaborative, and encouraging. I want both you and your child to feel understood and empowered, with practical tools and long-term strategies that promote emotional health, resilience, and growth.
