Getting to know Dr. Carolina Tanzer

I'm a Board Certified Psychiatrist, with 15 years of experience, specialized in diagnosis and medication management of ADD/ADHD, Anxiety disorders, Depression/mood disorders, PTSD, and several other psychiatric diagnoses. I graduated from medical school at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine and thereafter completed my Postgraduate training in Psychiatry at Bergen Regional Medical Center (NJ) in 2013. After my Psychiatric training, I went on to pursue a subspecialty training fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, which I completed in 2014. After graduating the Fellowship program, I began practicing as an Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatrist at Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital, NY, where I was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry. I practiced at Mount Sinai for four years until I went on to practice at Maimonides Medical Center in 2018. At this Brooklyn-based hospital, I worked as an Inpatient Psychiatry Attending and did monthly shift work as an Emergency Room Attending. During this period, I had the opportunity to teach Psychiatric residents while they completed their clinical rotations. Practicing in both the emergency and inpatient settings for those first 6 years after my training provided me with extensive experience in treating acutely ill patients. During those 6 years I also had the opportunity to gain experience in Telemedicine/Telepsychiatry: In 2016, while still working at Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s, I started working a few shifts a month with the Emergency Telepsychiatry department at Lenox Hill Hospital, NY. It was during my Telepsychiatry experience at Lenox Hill Hospital that I began to love working with telepsychiatry services—I started working with an Outpatient Telemedicine practice, and soon after decided to start my own practice. My intention was to have less time constraints and more flexibility to apply the philosophy behind my medical training —treating the whole person.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In my practice, the patient’s treatment plan may include any combination of the following- psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, yoga and movement exercises, and meditation. After a thorough evaluation and discussion with the patient, the treatment plan is customized to the patient's needs.

Excellent doctor! I highly recommend Dr. Tanzer.
I highly recommend Dr. Tanzer. I cannot thank her enough for how far I have come. She is attentive, highly knowledgeable, and makes you feel at ease. It also felt great to participate in putting together my treatment plan.
Dr. Tanzer is a wonderful and kind psychiatrist. She listened and asked me all the right questions, taking the time needed, and leaving nothing important uncovered. This is refreshing compared to previous psychiatrists who were much more brief and on the surface with me. The attention and time she has provided me is completely worth it. I am truly grateful to have found her.
