Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
NY
Hi, I’m Carolyn, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I believe mental health care works best when you feel like you’re talking to an actual person, not just sitting across from someone who is checking boxes on a form. I work with adults dealing with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, sleep concerns, and the stress that comes with major life changes. I take time to understand what’s actually going on in your life and what you’re hoping to get out of treatment. Sometimes that means medication, sometimes it means working through things in a little more depth, and often it’s a combination of both. When we consider medication, I want you to understand why we’re choosing it, what to expect, and what other options are available. I don’t believe in throwing medications at a problem or keeping you on something that isn’t working just because you’ve been taking it for years. Treatment should be something we figure out together. I also know that making the decision to see a psychiatric provider can be a big step. You don’t need to know exactly what diagnosis you have or what treatment you need before you come in. You just need to know that something isn’t feeling right and that you’d like some help. My approach is straightforward, compassionate, and judgment-free. I want you to feel comfortable being honest with me, even when things are messy or difficult. Most importantly, I want you to leave our visits feeling heard and with a plan that actually makes sense for you.

Getting to know Carolyn Conover

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe good mental health care should feel like a conversation, not a lecture. My approach is collaborative, practical, and centered around you as a whole person, not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. When we work together, I want you to feel comfortable being honest about what’s actually going on, including what isn’t working, what you’re worried about, and what you want to be different. I’m not here to judge you or tell you how you “should” feel. We’ll work together to understand what you’re experiencing and figure out what makes sense for you. I provide medication management as well as supportive therapy, and I often incorporate therapy into appointments rather than treating medication and emotional support as two completely separate things. Depending on what you need, sessions may include talking through current stressors, relationships, life changes, coping strategies, patterns that keep coming up, and how your mental health is affecting your day-to-day life. I also believe medication should be a thoughtful decision, not an automatic one. If medication is appropriate, I’ll explain the options, benefits, risks, and alternatives so you can make an informed decision. If something isn’t working, we’ll talk about it and adjust the plan rather than forcing you to stay with something that doesn’t feel right. My goal is for you to leave appointments feeling heard, understood, and like you have an actual plan, not like you just checked a box and got a prescription. Most importantly, you don’t need to have everything figured out before you reach out. You just need to know that something isn’t feeling right and that you’d like some help.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first appointment is really about getting to know you and understanding what brought you in. We’ll talk about your current symptoms and concerns, your mental health history, what you’ve tried in the past, and what you’re hoping to get out of treatment. We’ll also talk through your goals and what you feel would actually be helpful moving forward. From there, we’ll work together to create a treatment plan that fits your needs. This may include medication management, supportive therapy, lifestyle or behavioral recommendations, or a combination of these. If medication is part of the plan, we’ll discuss the options together and I’ll make sure you understand what we’re considering and why. Follow-up appointments are individualized based on what you need. Some visits may focus more on medication and symptom changes, while others may involve more time talking through stressors, relationships, life changes, or other things affecting your mental health. I don’t believe every appointment needs to look exactly the same. I also want treatment to be a process rather than something that happens *to* you. We’ll regularly check in about what is and isn’t working and make adjustments as needed. My goal is for you to feel heard, involved in your care, and comfortable bringing up concerns or questions along the way.
