Getting to know Charles Thornton

Charles Thornton, a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner specializing in adult care, offers virtual consultations. In-person appointments may be necessary for specific medications and are conducted at Better Choices Consulting in Philadelphia following an initial virtual visit. Please read the complete profile and policies prior to booking. Combining medication and mindfulness, Mr. Thornton helps patients overcome anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Through individualized care, he guides individuals toward a balanced and fulfilling life. Mr. Thornton completed his master's degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing from Walden University. He believes in developing partnerships with patients to maintain and improve lifelong health. **Treatment Philosophy** I believe in a comprehensive and collaborative approach to mental health care. This may include a combination of therapy, lifestyle changes, and, when necessary, non-habit-forming medication. I do not prescribe benzodiazepines or hypnotics, such as alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Diastat, Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and sedatives like estazolam (Prosom), temazepam (Restoril), and triazolam (Halcion) due to their potential for dependence. The decision to prescribe medication is made on an individual basis, taking into account potential interactions with other substances. **Stimulant Medication and Substance Use** For the safety and efficacy of treatment, I do not prescribe stimulant medications to patients who are currently using marijuana, benzodiazepines, or illegal substances. Stimulant medications can interact with these substances, potentially causing negative side effects or reducing the effectiveness of treatment. If you're interested in exploring treatment with stimulants, I'd be happy to discuss options once you've stopped using these substances. I can provide resources or referrals to help with substance use concerns.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide kindness. I care about people and their life struggles. Any provider can prescribe medication, and there are thousands out there. I want people to help make better choices for the future about their own lives and well-being. People need help from their troubling times to have a transformational life experience with their treatment. Whether you start treatment with me or with another provider, you should continue with a provider you feel is a good fit for you. NP Charles Thornton was incredibly kind, professional, and communicative throughout my visit. He is very knowledgeable about ADHD and conducted a thorough assessment, making it clear that he genuinely wants the best for his patients. He explained his treatment plan in detail, educated me about ADHD, and carefully reviewed potential medication interactions and side effects. I’ve started the medication he prescribed, and after months of feeling stuck and unwell, I finally feel like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. His pricing is more than fair compared to others, and I never once felt rushed during the appointment. I’m very grateful for his time, patience, and expertise. I highly recommend his services and will be seeing him again!

Charles was super communicative and an amazing listener. He made sure that I was comfortable with everything before setting things in place, and answered every question that I had. While being communicative and responsive, he's also very fast and efficient as well. Definitely recommend.

A last minute appointment and Dr. took his time and was professional. Even though it was late in the day i felt he cares for his clients and has great work ethic. Integrity and treats patient with respect
    Verified patientVideo visit
I'm pursuing treatment after a 17-year hiatus. One of my biggest reasons for dropping care in the first place was what I felt to be a lack of authenticity in providers. Charles was a pure delight.

    Compassionate great listener
    Verified patientVideo visit
I have a lot of past trauma, ptsd, adhd, mood swings, and other things I am not sure of that cause it. He listens and went over time on my appt. Even a free call back because we couldn’t finish meeting. I am happy with results. I would suggest him over others. Really takes his time to listen.

Seemed mentally checked out during our visit and very dismissive of my feelings. Most of the appointment felt like he was reading from a script.
It feels good to have someone actively listen to your complete thoughts and give unbiased feedback. He was very intuned to everything I said and gave feedback I could understand and acknowledged everything I had to say. Very professional and I look forward to my sessions, as for a long time I neglected to seek the help because of the fear of the lack of these same reasons.

I very much do not trust Psychiatry due to my own experience working on a psychiatric hospital floor and though I am still wary he has not given a reason to distrust him
    Very nice and professional

I was very surprised @ how good of a communicator the Dr. was, I haven’t had many good experiences with Psychiatrist’s but this one made me feel heard, & very much seen. I can’t wait until the next session!

Great conversation with Charles. Was able to speak on things I have not spoke to many about and gave me a great assessment for a first visit & also some very helpful information. Will be looking forward to more visits.
I have been under psychiatric care since 2006. This is the first doctor who was willing to listen to me, he was very personable and asked the right questions. Very knowledgeable and up to date on all issues I talked to him about.
