“I could cry with how much positive attention I got from from Chelsi. I’m in a dark place and she really took the time to listen and explain the medication given. She was very thoughtful, thorough and kind. Even with things she wasn’t sure about such as how to apply disability she still gave resources and recommended a trauma therapist. I’ll definitely be coming back and making sure I see her again. I feel like the battle plan to tackle my depression is a team effort and I’m not alone anymore.”

Getting to know Chelsi Hollingshead

I am committed to helping individuals manage emotional distress and reduce the impact of psychiatric challenges by focusing on establishing a positive therapeutic relationship and tailored medication prescribing. With a passion for continuous learning, I seek to expand my knowledge and refine my skills to provide the best care for each client. I earned both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Nursing from the University of Utah College of Nursing. With over 20 years of experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I have worked in diverse settings, including adult psychiatric care, mental health integration in primary care, inpatient and outpatient services at Primary Children's Hospital, and volunteer work at the Polizzi Clinic for underserved communities in Salt Lake City. Since relocating to Southern Utah, I've managed psychiatric care for adolescents in residential treatment, provided telepsychiatry with Connect Care during the COVID-19 pandemic, treated individuals in substance use recovery, and participated in the community service of The Doctor's Volunteer Clinic as a psychiatric NP. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, I spent 11 years as an emergency room nurse, shaping my compassionate and confident approach to clinical decision-making. Whether you are struggling with inattentiveness, insomnia, compulsive behaviors, anxiety, psychosis, poor motivation, racing thoughts, mood changes after a concussive injury-you name it-I am here to help. Together, we can explore the impact of these challenges and create a clear, purposeful plan for moving forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a Board-Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I specialize in providing comprehensive psychiatric care to individuals of all ages, from childhood to late adulthood. My training and experience allow me to address a wide range of psychiatric concerns with personalized, evidence-based treatment plans. I work closely with clients to adjust medications when necessary, ensuring treatments are tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals. I have treated clients aged 4 to 82, and my approach is rooted in understanding the social, emotional, and developmental factors that influence mental health. I focus on creating collaborative relationships where clients feel heard and supported in their mental health journey. In our initial session, I will conduct a thorough intake, asking focused questions to better understand your symptoms and goals. From there, we will work together to develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific concerns. My Master’s Thesis at the University of Utah focused on Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) for psychiatric conditions, and I continue to explore ways to integrate holistic practices into mental health care. I am also a Qualified Marijuana Provider (QMP), certified to prescribe medicinal marijuana for conditions like chronic pain and PTSD, and I collaborate with specialized PTSD therapists within the practice. My goal is to empower you in your mental health journey through compassionate care and a tailored approach to treatment. Together, we will work to achieve your mental health goals and improve your overall well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In my work with clients, I begin by identifying key concerns and carefully reviewing the history to understand the full context of presentation, during a 60 minute initial visit. I will explore some standard questionnaires that provide useful direction, however, I focus more on how symptoms impact the client's daily life. I approach psychiatry like detective work, using the client's history to guide treatment decisions. Once a medication is prescribed, I closely monitor its effectiveness, assess any side effects, and make titrated adjustments to support a balance of benefit. I try to utilize medications with lesser side effect profiles, so a person feels like they are not just trading in one issue for another. I emphasize the importance of collaboration, encouraging clients to actively participate in decisions about their medications and treatments. I regularly check in with follow-up visits of 30 minutes to ensure a person feels heard and involved in their care. Ultimately, the success of any prescribed treatment depends on a strong, ongoing partnership, where communication remains open and transparent throughout the process.
