Cheryl Akuave, APRN

Family Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
MD
Many of the people I work with are adults and teens who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally drained. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood changes, trauma, or life stress and feel stuck despite trying to cope alone. Others seek clarity around symptoms or support during major life transitions. Children and adolescents may struggle with emotional regulation, attention, mood changes, or behavioral concerns. Often, individuals or parents want relief and a clear path forward with a provider who listens and helps them feel more balanced, focused, and hopeful. I provide evidence-based psychiatric care for adults, including comprehensive evaluations and medication management when appropriate. My approach is collaborative, thoughtful, and individualized. I offer secure telehealth services across Maryland, making high-quality mental health care accessible and convenient. Reaching out for mental health support can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to do this alone. I strive to create a calm, supportive space where you feel heard and respected. If you’re ready for clarity, support, and meaningful change, I would be honored to walk alongside you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is a collaborative and thoughtful process. During your first visit, we will take time to explore your concerns in depth; including your symptoms, personal history, lifestyle, and goals so that we can develop a clear and individualized treatment plan together. I believe in providing balanced, evidence-based care. Medication is never rushed and is only recommended when clinically appropriate. I prioritize education, transparency, and shared decision-making so you understand your options and feel empowered in your care. My style is calm, attentive, and nonjudgmental. I aim to create a supportive space where you feel heard and respected. Follow-up visits focus on monitoring progress, adjusting treatment as needed, and ensuring you are moving toward greater stability and overall wellness. My goal is not just symptom relief, but helping you build sustainable tools and confidence for long-term emotional health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. During this initial visit, we take time to review your current concerns, mental health history, medical background, lifestyle factors, and goals for treatment. I also use evidence-based screening tools when appropriate to ensure a thorough and accurate diagnostic process. After gathering this information, we discuss impressions and collaboratively develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication management, supportive therapy, lifestyle recommendations, or coordination with your therapist or primary care provider if needed. If medication is part of your treatment, I take a thoughtful and measured approach. We review benefits, potential side effects, and alternatives so you feel informed and comfortable with the plan. My goal is to use the lowest effective dose and adjust gradually based on your response. Follow-up visits focus on monitoring progress, refining the treatment plan, and ensuring you are moving toward greater stability and clarity. I provide supportive, solution-focused therapeutic interventions during visits and encourage an integrated approach to long-term wellness. Throughout the process, you can expect a calm, respectful, and collaborative environment where your voice and preferences are central to your care.
