Getting to know Dr. Chizoba Mbachu

Welcome! I first want to commend you for taking the bold step of putting your mental health into your own hands. My name is Dr. Chizoba Mbachu, and as your Doctor of Nursing Practice, trained at Chapman University, I am here to guide you along this journey of self-healing so that together we can help you reach your full potential in no time. My specialization is psychiatry, and with over seven years of experience in this field, I can provide you with the tools needed to manage day-to-day pressures and stressors effectively.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I do both talk therapy and medication management. A lot of people assume a psychiatric nurse practitioner only prescribes, so it is worth saying plainly: I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for trauma. If medication is the right tool, we decide on it together, and it is never the only thing I offer. All of my visits are by video. You need to be physically in New Jersey during appointments, and a private space with decent internet. I work with adults 18 and over. I know that sometimes care can't happen during convenient hours; so my hours run into the evening, most nights until late, plus Sunday and Tuesday mornings. If a standard 9-to-5 schedule has been the thing stopping you from getting care, please don't feel limited any longer! I am a solo practitioner, not a large group. That means you see me every time, and I know your history without reading it off a chart. I also care about my patients so I give them a direct line to my work phone I keep on me at all times, just in case you are feeling any adverse reactions or need to book an emergency session.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Step one is a free 15-minute phone call, if you want it. You tell me briefly what is going on, I tell you how I work, and we decide together whether to move forward. Step two is the first full appointment, about 60 minutes. This is mostly a conversation. I will ask what brought you in, what you have already tried, your medical and family history, how you are sleeping, and what you want to be different. I will complete a full psychiatric evaluation. You set the pace and you never have to share more than you are ready to. By the end of that visit we will have a plan you actually agree with. That might be talk therapy, medication, or both. If medication is part of it, I will explain what it does, how long it takes to work, and what side effects to watch for before you fill anything. Follow-up visits run 30 to 45 minutes. Early on we may meet weekly or every two weeks so I can see how you are responding. As things stabilize, visits spread out. Some patients come monthly, some every few months. I adjust to how you are doing, not to a fixed schedule. Along the way I will ask you directly whether this is working. If it is not, tell me. Changing the plan is normal and it is not a failure.
