About Dr. Christen Russo

Dr. Christen Russo, associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the non-operative and operative care of pediatric patients, from pre-natal to adolescent care and consultation. She has particular interests in bone health and nutrition, conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, and trauma. Dr. Russo approaches care holistically, recognizing that pediatric patients are not just little adults – they have different needs based on their unique family, education and athletic dispositions. She promotes a commitment to education, so that at the end of the visit, parents and patients are comfortable and understand the pathology and treatment plans. Dr. Russo graduated from Manhattan's Stuyvesant High School at the turn of the millennium. She completed her B.A. in English Literature & Literary History from Georgetown University, while serving as a student athletic trainer for their prestigious Division I athletics program. She then earned her Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York-Downstate. Dr. Russo completed an internship in general surgery at Brown University, and returned to SUNY Downstate for her residency in orthopedic surgery. After completing residency, Dr. Russo pursued a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, part of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She learned and participated in cutting edge techniques in modern pediatric orthopedics, completed research in the field of growing spine instrumentation, and was trained in the conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

My daughter was given X-rays of her ankle but I explained beforehand that the first x-ray said it was the foot, I was told it’s fine because the x-ray would be the whole foot. When we saw the doctor she said the X-ray was of the ankle and she doesn’t see a fracture but the paper I showed her says it’s the top of the foot and since my daughter said the pain is off and on she didn’t take the injury seriously. She poked her foot and said everything was fine. My daughter is still in pain with no resolution, I feel like the appointment was a waste of time.
Definitely recommend Dr. Russo, she is so friendly inviting and down to earth. Very knowledgeable. She communicates with you in a way that you understand. She speaks to everyone in the room not just the parent but the patient (child) as well. Really great experience going to see her and will continue. You will not be disappointed taking your child to her.

Dr. Russo was rude and dismissive. I was there for my daughter and we both left feeling very upset. The office and staff were great!
Really recommend this doctor she was a great listener, very friendly , did not rush us. The office was clean and friendly staff

We had an excellent visit with Dr. Russo, she was extremely knowledgeable and went beyond to explain in detail and in terms that my child (and myself) can easily understand and offered extra advice and help for our situation. My child was very comfortable and happy with Dr. Russo. I highly recommend this doctor. The office staff were all so friendly and professional and it was a very comfortable atmosphere. Thank you!

Overall great experience from making the appointment to the actual visit with Dr Russo The location is convenient as it provides paid valet parking. The staff is helpful and courteous. They explained the process and immediately helped my daughter with her appointment. Dr Russo was very professional, engaging, and answered all of our questions. She gave us insight to my daughter's injury, what to expect, the timeline, and the next steps to recovery. Will return and will recommend.

Dr. Russo is the best!!!
Front desk spoke loudly and unprofessionally about personal topics and also used profanity. The doctor wore an extremely short dress, very unprofessional looking, and with eye contact, it was clear this woman doesn’t like African American patients, but will fake it. Then she sends in someone after our consult who had a bad body odor and spoke to me as if I was incoherent. It’s a never again for me.

Dr Russo came into the room within 2 minutes of being called back. She was very thorough with her examination and recommended next steps. We got a referral and they even called to schedule an appointment before we got home.

The doctor was awesome and the staff was good, once they got organized with my particular situation. Would definitely go back again if needed.
