Getting to know Christopher (Topher) McMullin

I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in San Francisco offering evidence-based therapy for individuals and couples. My practice centers on couples therapy, adult ADHD, therapy for gay men and LGBTQ+ clients, and anxiety — particularly the kind that gets tangled up with ambition, high standards, and demanding careers. My clinical foundation is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for individuals and the Gottman Method for couples — approaches grounded in the science of behavior change. I'm active and engaged in sessions: I ask thoughtful questions, offer candid observations, and collaborate with clients on ways to apply therapy to daily life, while making room for deeper questions about identity, meaning, and how you want to live. I see clients in person at my downtown San Francisco office and by video throughout California. The easiest first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation to get a sense of whether we'd be a good fit. Individual sessions are $250 and couples sessions are $300; I'm an out-of-network provider and can provide superbills for possible reimbursement.

What should a new client know about working with you?

— Couples — I use the Gottman Method, grounded in more than 50 years of research, integrated with ACT. The first phase includes a structured assessment of your relationship's strengths, stress points, and recurring patterns, followed by focused work on communication, trust, friendship, and intimacy. Whether or not things are currently going well, there's an opportunity to learn better ways to communicate and deepen connection. I have particular experience with queer couples, consensually nonmonogamous relationships, and couples navigating ADHD or demanding careers. — Gay Men & LGBTQ+ Clients — I provide targeted support for gay men navigating a wide range of challenges: loneliness and building community, anxiety and depression, substance use, open relationships and chosen family, coming out, and sexuality — including identity, desire, communication, and sexual health. My approach is respectful, candid, and values-based. — Adult ADHD — I work with bright, capable adults — including many diagnosed later in life — who already know the standard advice and want a more individualized approach. We focus on understanding your particular patterns and narrowing the gap between intention and action. — Also in my practice — Anxiety and overthinking, founders and organizational leaders, therapy for therapists, grief, trauma histories, and chronic pain.
